Is this done with your 4x5? Either way, I feel like I am trying to sample a cake from a couple of crumbs. I think its very difficult to really appreciate in this form. Very well thought out composition.

Hi, Bob,

Knowing the scene, and your fascination with it, I would appreciate any comments you might offer on your approach to the flat lighting and your tonal management.

Hope you and yours are having a great holiday season.

Dave

I always appreciate your b&w work - wonderful subtleties, shading and contrasts all work together to create a very impactful image. Thanks for posting!

John, Bill, fergmark, Dave, Rich, AzPicLady, and Tommy, thank you all for the visit and comments.

Fergmark, Yes, this was shot with my 4x5. I'm not quite sure I understand your comment completely. Though, I do admit the entire Canyon De Chelly area is difficult to capture with just one photograph.

Dave, the lighting was anything other than what I had hoped. There was a layer of ground fog that lifted a bit prior to arriving at the location. The fog became a very large chimera and provided nothing but flat lighting. Attempts to do much in processing cause some garish results. I'll be going back again, hopefully with a bit better cloud situation.

The main inspiration for this image was one done by Ansel Adams in 1941, approximately. http://anseladams.com/new-modern-replica-canyon-de-chelly/

Rich, your comment is quite close to being more real than you might imagine. The location from which I took this photograph was marked with an X carved in the rock.

I love b&w when there are more predictable or familiar shapes. I think I would like this better in color. Just my personal preference.

The colors, at the time, were pretty bland. In fact, I had no other choice.
