You SX50 users out there may already be aware of this, but for those who don't, be aware that using a hot shoe protector on this camera may disable the in-camera flash.
It seems a bit strange that something as benign as a generic plastic hot shoe protector could do that but it does. I'm trying to find if Canon makes a hot shoe cap for this camera that will not interfere with the built-in flash operation, but no luck so far. There's nothing the manual that I can find that cautions the user about this.

The same thing applies to the G1X.
Anything that slides into the hot shoe will shut off the internal flash. It's a mechanical switch on the side contact. You'd have to find something that snaps on OVER the hot shoe.
Good luck.
I have an SX50, never knew that but don't have a hot shoe protector.
So if you stick a bubble level in the shoe, the internal flash will be turned off???
Dang.
You could notch the edge of the protector so the switch is off when the protecto is all the way in

Thats what i did. Use a nail clipper
Thanks for the tip, btsken!
I examined the hot shoe expecting to find one of the contact terminals was maybe spring loaded and when compressed by the base of a flash would do the disabling of the internal flash function. I didn’t think to examine the edges of the slot.
