I understand that just as there are users who are not photography or camera savvy, there are also those who are also internet challenged. Yes, the most recent question about 42nd Street Photo is repeatedly asked. Similarly, the same replies are repeatedly given -- both the helpful responses as well as the sarcastic replies.

Perhaps it might be useful to think out of the box on how to reduce the frequency of the same questions being asked and answered. The UHH site has a basic design, so maybe it's not possible to change how the page looks.

Because of the barebones look of the UHH page, the font size of text with links at the top of the page is quite small. It doesn't stand out. I'm not trying to make excuses for people not using the Search function; however, since it seems to happen quite frequently, maybe (in part -- not totally), part of the problem could be in the website design. People want fast answers and maybe that is part of the problem. They can't be bothered or don't know how to read the small text at the top of the screen.

If one clicks on the Help link at the top of each page, including the home page, the first listing on the next page is Frequently Asked Questions; however, these FAQ are related mostly to posting topics. All of the topics seem to be about navigating the website to post messages, upload photos, etc.

What about an FAQ for the common questions that new users ask e.g. 42nd Street Camera, Abe's, I need a camera recommendation, Point and Shoot, etc.?

Maybe a quick lesson on how to search for topics upon registration would be helpful.

....and nobody would follow it and there'd be 100 posts titled: "how do I search for topics" along with the 100 repeated answers.

I figure this forum is social as much as technical. Many of the questions that are posted here could be answered by using Google, but there's no interaction in that, and it could take quite a while.

I never use the Search feature because it depends on the title the poster gives to his topic. While "42nd St" would be easy to find, a title like "Help" is worthless.

For that recent 42nd St question, answers went on for three pages, and that's after the first correct response. We're humans, and we like to express our opinions, even if they're the same as everyone else's.

That is true, many posts ho off topic for several pages. Honestly I use the search feature successfully every once in a while.

It's been my experience on almost ANY forum, posts beyond the third page of ANY thread tend to be useless. Remember that old party game, "Round Robin?" By the time the stated phrase gets back to the first person, it scarcely resembles the original.

The exceptions to this tend to be threads where the original poster isn't asking for help or advice, but is simply starting a conversation. Even then, pretty much has already been said by the end of the third page.

A quick topic on how to word titles so they show up in searches should be included also!

I'll search, but not anticipate getting a lot of good results because of poor titling. Yes, HELP, PRINTER QUESTION, WHAT TO BUY, etc. are totally worthless for a search!!!

All well and good, but how many people would see and actually read it? Topics disappear in minutes. Topics that are stuck to the top of each section are widely overlooked. That is obvious by the number of times people ask how to post a picture, or by how many photos are posted in the discussion forum.

UHH is, among other things, a soapbox where we come to be heard, not to listen. Ever see, I didn't have time to read the thread .... but here's my opinion. Anyone ever see a recommended link that was already provided on pages 1, 3, 4, 7, 9 and 11?

If you walk into the neighborhood bar and join in a conversation, that is your starting point and you will likely repeat something that was already said. This is not a problem in the neighborhood bar 'cause after the third drink nobody remembers what was said, nor do they give a hoot.

Until UHH starts serving drinks we just need to be sociable even if sober.

If it doesn't self destruct sooner, this post will probably disappear by lunchtime.

---

The menu at the top of the page has no particular order to it. Maybe the top two links in bold should be HELP and SEARCH.

Why does it bother you? You do not have to click on a topic.
