Was wondering if anyone has done any business with 42nd St. Photo. Contacted them twice to find out if a camera they had advertised was a US or an import model and have gotten no response. Is this a "GRAY MARKET" company ?

Why are they allowed to advertise on UHH if they aren't legit ?

Just a few blocks west and south, there is a REAL photography store...Called B&H.

Sorry. Didn't mean to offend. The asks for reviews on "Abe's of Maine" and "42nd Street" come up many times each week. And the answers are always the same. NO! BEWARE! DON'T DO IT!

Some of us who have responded multiple times to the same question may be a little testy. The search function is at the top of the UHH home page. Searching on 42nd Street will show multiple threads and no positive reviews.

Again, I apologize for offending you. Not my intent. Just wanted to save you from yet another bad experience.

One way to find a rip-off store is to check accessory prices.
Camera prices may be well below normal, but batteries and memory cards may be twice or 3x the price of other stores even for non OEM stuff. That’s a clue that the cameras may be gray market.

True, but not the only method. In addition to searching on the Hog, checking their warranty page and looking for references to manufacturer's guarantee generally reveal the ripoff operations.

tdozier3, In answering to your question, when you see either 42nd St Photo or Abe's of Maine, please run away from them if you don't want to loose your money and your mind alongside. This Forum is one place you should always come for advice, teachings and help in any and all things related to photography. Most of the people that posts their pictures here are great people with a real heart to help others: that is what in general the field of photography brings in us. Most of us don't just snap a photo to post: we look for the beauty, for the unusual, for the art and for the pride we have to show our creations in this Forum. And when we seek comments on them we should accept what we hear from our fellow UHHogers as their attempt to help. Of course in a sea of people in this Forum sometimes you find few, very few ones who's comments should be discarded because they always think they know it all and we are just annoying people with nothing to do but to bother them. I can guarantee you Andy is not one of them.
Good luck in your search and please post the results in this Forum. We look forward in seeing them.

You might want to take that same advise.

The admin can confirm this, but I believe that he has little control over the advertising that is mixed in to the web pages when they are sent to you. When I get fashion items for my wife, all I see is ads from the sites visited.
Then, I'll go to Adorama, or B&H, and the ads will change over.

If you look at the ads here most have a little box in the upper left hand corner that say AD. If you click on that box you will see "Ads by Google". That's why they change based on where folks have been looking.

Santa knows if you've been bad or good. Google knows a lot more about you than Santa.
