Blaster,
I had a similar experience a couple of weeks ago right down to the fire ants. I did see a couple of Snail Kites. It is sad to see how much it has gone down hill in just a couple of years.
You caught what was there well. Good job. I hope they do make an effort to get it back in shape soon.

Sashayed through the Vero Beach Wetlands the other morning. Sadly its deteriorated over the last two years and its unfortunate the city has failed to maintain this wetland....the cells now full of Rushes, loaded with muck, only one or two bodies of water are really available for viewing, walkways and observation platforms are rotted and unusable. Use to be a great place for Snail Kites but have seen only one or two this year, none lately. I do believe this is where all the fire ants in Florida are born and then transported elsewhere (gotta watch your step)... ...However there were still a few interesting birds available. The Kingfisher just appeared and as usual, I wasn't ready but took the shot anyway.

It had a fair amount of Roseate Spoonbills, Herons, Storks, the usual ducks, a couple of Mergansers and of course Ospreys and the one and only Painted Bunting I've seen there.

It's been more than two years since we visited Viera wetlands, Blaster and am sorry to hear the bad news but such a beautiful series anyway, and would settle on the long drive down from here just to capture an image as beautiful as your spoonbills--great lighting and about as nice as I can remember seeing, especially when double-clicked, and your other images are great also--very nice work!

Hey Corky,
Blaster was commenting about the treatment plant in Vero Beach not the one at Viera. Although sb mentioned similar issues at Viera. I was up there a week or so ago and there wasn't much to see and the vegetation had taken over a few of the ponds and the berms were a little rough traveling. I didn't see much at Viera. I think that there was more to see at the Orlando Wetlands in Christmas, FL. It will be nice to see how the new pond there is when it is reflooded.
Speaking of Christmas, FL I hope everyone here has a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Thanks, so much for the correction, Mike and we like to visit Merrit Island, and we also visited the Blue Cypress Water Management Area along with Viera while down in November two years ago and think that there was more action at Vieria at that time. Several trips back we purchased A Birders Guide To Florida, by Bill Pranty which was published by the American Birding Association and looking at one of its maps can see that it's quite a distance between Vierra wetlands and Vero Beach. It looks like we camped fairly close to the Vero Beach for several days at the Savanna Recreation area on one trip and there were sandhill cranes walking around in the campsites and the canals had many immature little blue herons feeding in them. The book provides much good info but its last revision was in 2005. We look for areas that have driving trails or such as my wife's knees are in pretty bad shape and she cannot do a lot of walking unless she is shopping and that's one reason we really love Merrit Island and usually camp at Manatee Hammock's campground! Thanks for your help and also hope that you and family have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and take care!

Corky if you're ever near Orlando the Orlando Wetlands out by Ft Christmas, volunteers will take you on a free tram tour on Friday, Saturday and Sunday otherwise it's a walking area.

Just one more thing before I ware out my welcome. A very interesting blogger from this part of Florida is Mark Smith on YouTube. He does a great job, I think, and a lot of the places are Eastern FL.
