Someone just posted about needing a repair after dropping his camera. Do any of you have insurance that covers dropping?

It costs exactly the same as the cost of replacement/repair of the equipment damaged. Odd coincidence huh?

Jerry, I think he was kidding you. Self insured means you pay for everything. :) I have a rider on my home insurance that covers everything. Theft, fire, damage. Full replacement or fixed. If you are not a pro it is very cheap. It runs me around $50 a year. I have around $40,000 in gear covered now. That is all my old bodies and lenses too.

Erv, I need a contact with who you have insurance with. $40,000 for $50? I'm well below 40k in gear and well above $50 for non pro coverage. Additional info would be nice.

My homeowners rider is about $1 per $1000 of equip per year. So IF I had $40,000 of equip it would be about $400 per year.

Hi Mike. I am in good hands. :) Allstate. I have every thing through them though. 2 houses,4 cars, a camper, all my tools I carry in the truck( about 18,000 worth) and all my camera gear. And I have been with them for a long time. Every 2 years I shop around for better prices. If I find one they match or beat it. Same folks for the whole time I have been with them.
Erv
Forgot to add, that is full coverage on every thing too.

Never carried any insurance for my amateur gear, but if I were a pro and had a significant investment, it would be foolish not to.

Dropped my Canon 50D twice now. Suffered a few cosmetic scratches, but no permanent damage. The 50D has a pretty solid build.

I you insure with your homeowner's policy be sure to make a record of the valuables in your home. Recipts and photos of the items, specifically. They don't usually tell you that you need to do that. (Otherwise, people could claim things that never existed.)
