With any luck, I'll be going on a whale watch cruise next month in Provincetown, MA. I haven't been on one of these in years. Should I take a chance with salt spray and my DSLR, or should I bring a P&S?

Maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to buy a waterproof camera. :D Not really.
Lake water I wouldn't mind, but this is salt water.

Jerry:
I have been on a couple of whale watches out of P-Town and used my DSLR with no problems with spray. The last time we went we had a great time and saw a lot of whales some very close to our boat. I've attached a couple of shot I took. Have fun.
Hope you have better luck than I did. We went to Maui in March, went on a whale watching boat, we went out where the whales were and saw several. There is spray, but kept my DSLR under my coat. We were too far away to get good pictures. They told us they were restricted from getting closer. There were other boats a lot closer (marine biologists). The conditions are not the best. The boat is moving, the water is moving, you have no idea where the next whale will jump out of the water. Auto focus didn't know what to do with the waves and the whales. If you can get closer, you should be able to get some good shots.
I got a pair of them a while back but never had to use them. Great price!

I don't particularly like the drawstring around the lens hood, so I use a wide rubber band there, it offers a better seal. One of these and an optically clear filter on the lens and you will have no worries with your gear.
Gosh, bring along the Nikon P510 or the
Canon with the long lens.

I'd have to buy them first! :D
I have been doing whale watches for 30 years. I wipe everything down after the watch I use 2 DSRLs One with a 70-200 + 1.4 TC and one with a 24-70. do not change lens. reason for both is that the whales may be far away or right up to the boat and use the longer lens for birds. usually will use shutter priority @ 1/1250 second to help freeze the action.
Have an enjoyable trip

Have a great trip, Jerry. We did the whale watching trip out of P-town several years ago. Flat calm, whales close to the boat (and man they are bigger that the boat) spray was minimal but salt in the air was the problem. I used a clear bag, with zip, for freezing food. Cut a hole for the lens and it worked fine. I hope the weather is great, the whales are friendly, and the sea is kind. Let's see some wonderful shots of P-town and the sea life.
I have spent hundreds of hours on the ocean, from dead calm to winter storm rough, always with a load of photo gear shooting for a fishing lodge client. I have never used anything except a re-purposed garbage bag rubber banded to the lens, with the camera and I inside the bag, shooting, but only in the worst possible weather.
The shot here required manual focus because there was no object of contrast to use auto focus. Weird conditions.
Panama Whale Migration. The jump here is to shed parasites.
Take the DSLR...You will regret it if you don't....
I have also been out whale watching out of P-Town a few times over the years, we have always been lucking with sightings.
This year we were in California and went whale watching in Monterey..We had a good day, but the whales were very far from the boat and a lot of them were breaching(jumping), the Capt. stated that we could not go closer because of it. I had my Nikon 5100 and got a few shots, but they were far in the distance.
