On my D7000 I shoot RAW on one card and JPEG on the other. If you only have a one card camera and you shoot both, how are the files organized? Do they alternate RAW then the JPEG version or are all the RAW together and then the JPEGs together? Just curious because I like to use either the RAW or the JPEG for editing but not both. If they alternate, I would have to do an extra step in Windows Explorer to sort them by file extension so I could copy to my PC and efficiently import just one or the other into PS Elements. Your advise would be appreciated.

On my D90, I believe they used to alternate. I would get both when I downloaded them and have to go to information to figure out which was which. It’s so much easier on my 7100 with 2 card slots.

I keep RAW & JPEG in the same folder sorted by file name.
Tried separating them into different directories long ago, but that was way too cumbersome.
If I view a JPEG and want to edit the RAW, it's right next to it in the directory.
I don't use a catalogger for viewing usually. Just double click on the desired file in Windows Explorer mostly.
(My editors do look at the root photo directory (and down) though, so all thumbnails do show up in the editor.)

There are two files next to one another in the directory.

That seems easy for you to determine. Why not put one card in your D7000, set for RAW & JPEG, take a dozen shots and see how the files are organized.

I use a Pentax K-x which has only one card so when I shoot JPG and RAW the photos are stored consecutively alternated versions. Tried separating them a few times and ended up with copies of photos that were copies of photos. It became too confusing/frustrating to separate them so now I shoot only raw.

It doesn't matter how they are stored.
As they are named identically (except by the extension), they will show alternated if you are viewing ordered by name or date, and they will be all JPG together and then all RAW together is you are viewing ordered by extension.

I think the confusion is based on that, by default, folders show files ordered by name.

Using my Pentax K5II I only have one card. I shoot both RAW and .jpg simultaneously. Hence, all photo files are in the same folder. I download all the files onto my hard disk, in my named folder. Windows will display both file types in its photo viewer, so I don't have to separate the photos by type. I, sometimes create a sub folder and put my RAW files in there. I can send the .jpg files out, immediately, and work on the RAW files for further processing, if necessary.

It doesn't matter how they are arranged on the card. When you download to your computer, they will be displayed in whatever order you tell the computer to display them. If you tell it to sort by date taken they will display in alternating order because the raw and jpeg were taken at the same time. If you sort by file name it will probably be the same because it will sort by the number and then by the type.

Maybe you want to post them or send to a friend who doesn't have a RAW processor??

On the 7D they alternate (I guess) but then when I open the folder after downloading I just sort by type and put JPEG and RAW in 2 different folders in the primary folder.

If you are going to "work" on them and then send them don't they have to be in Jpeg form? Not being argumentative just don't know the need for two formats.

Because the ones you send need to be in jpeg. The ones you work on are better in RAW. If you want to send one and also work on it, you would want both formats. For myself, I only use RAW because I can wait to send until later. But if you're shooting for work and need to send right away or don't have a computer with you then you need both formats.

That "extra step" is two mouse clicks! Shouldn't take too much time.
In Explorer, under "View" you can select to show your photos as icons, list, etc.
Select "Details", then from the column headers, select "Type".
Done.
