Don't get too hung up with the title. This is a result of me trying to combine a photograph and a bit of art (and it follows on from my post of Diesel Dancing yesterday, same girl). I've not done much with brushes in Photoshop but fancy trying my hand at painting. I thought of using a photo as a base and painting over it but decided that was probably not going to work very well, so this is a simple combination. Coincidently, I found a topic elsewhere on UHH where somebody was printing a photo to canvas then painting with oil paint over it, so maybe others do similar stuff - do you do anything like this? Do you think the combination works? I know there's some great Photoshop art out there.

The two halves are a bit too disparate for me. Also, a young lass emerging from flowers or forest should probably be in a flowing white gown rather than walking boots and carrying a satchel

There is a lot of Photoshop art that has caught my eye. One of pfrancke's newest is in Photo Gallery:

I know MinnieV and Piet have been taking the same online class, and maybe after the holidays, one of them might be willing to host a topic/tutorial.

Haven't heard of painting over a printed photo; sounds a little too much like "paint by numbers" to me

A great topic to introduce, Dave. Thank you!

My layman's view is that with this type of portrait the expression is critical and if you don't have a good one it might be an idea to go on looking for one. But the idea is sound.

Now what did I say about the title Linda?😠 Anyway, around here all the girls wear walking boots! I wondered why Piet had disappeared - that’s an amazing result. I remember him starting off in that direction with his model figures. Looks like I’d better take a course then.
Painting by numbers is often ridiculed but I have seen some special results from it. My own attempts as a child ended up looking like filled in blocks, but those that mastered blending did well with them. I guess Ps is much the same and certainly seems to require blending skills.
Thanks for pointing to Piet, I’ll keep an eye on his work.

Good point RG, I picked the first I came across. Must try harder!
Thanks for commenting.

What title? I was merely interpreting the visual you offered for feedback

If it interests you, try it three times. If it still draws you on, go for it. There is not right way to combine photos and art--many such works exist. Google "combine photography and painting."

A few of mine are included here, some 40 years apart.

I will do some research Bob. The thing that bothers me is whether the photo MUST be overpainted or whether it can be made to fit into and with a painted background.
I like the concept of your This Is Not A Painting. Is the first one a young ArtBob?

Yep, first one is an oh-so-intense young artist Bob.
As to the question that bothers you, I say do whatever you want—the "rules" are quite flexible if you want to show your work, and FINDING you answer is damn near as much fun as anything.

I think the penny has just dropped Bob. Linda pointed me toward pfranke’s (Piet’s) work and mentioned he and Minnie doing the same online course. I know I have the course that Min was doing as we’d spoken together of it. Most results I see from the course are rather ‘fairylike’ and this put me off somewhat. However, I’m sure the methods would be of use for the direction I might like to go - so, now I have more time, I’ll give it a go. Don’t hold your breath, but I will be persevering. Thanks for your encouragement.

I have been working on this type of thing for some time now. For me it's taking a lot of YouTube studying. I like what you are trying to do. This one haven't quite hit the mark yet, but don't give up I'm sure it can be a great image. It takes an eye to get the right images and then to blend them just right, I am still learning and struggling to get there too.
Keep on trying and keep posting I for one am very interested in your road to that stellar image.

"Paint by numbers"? In one of my Art classes, a discussion came about "Painting by numbers" and it seems that several old classic painters did exactly that in their process. They would paint a flat painting that served as the base for the final result. One statement that rang in my head was that they were then able to focus on the style of applying the paints to the base to evoke emotion or movement. Another, it allowed their students to learn their style. I don't recall whether they used Roman or Arabian numerals, though.
