Where exactly did you encounter this beast? Nice shots, too.

Thanks rmm. On the base at Vandenberg AFB, not far from Santa Maria, California. The beaches are closed (at least for humans) due to high surf advisories. I was trying to get to the top of the sea cliffs to get some shots of the surf when I saw this guy... before he saw me, to my surprise. He heard the shutter but didn't seem to be too concerned with my presence.

Nice shots. I saw lots of bobcats when we lived in Southern Arizona but most often when riding my bicycle and carrying only a cellphone so never got a decent picture.

Thank you. I've not seen lots of bobcats anywhere. About 4 or 5 my whole life, and I look for them. The only other bobcat shots I have are from southern Arizona. Fort Huachuca down near the Mexican border. I think I'm very privileged to have gotten these photos.

Great shots of a Lynx! Merry Christmas!

Thank you, phlash. Not Lynx, Bobcat. I do have some shots of a Lynx from Alaska. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Great catch, I've seen several in the wild, the south end running north. Never with a camera.

Thanks, Larry. I have a few south end headed north from this sequence but didn't see any reason to post them. I haven't seen very many of them and feel very luck to have gotten these shots.

They are so illusive. And I'm surprised that he allowed you to stay near him long enough to get these pictures.

Yeah, me too. I feel very lucky to have had this chance.

Did you notice in the last one you caught him spraying/marking his territory? 😉 Lucky timing, but you can only see it if enlarged.

Yes, I did notice that. I even tried sniffing the brush where he sprayed. My sense of smell is nearly non existent, but I did smell a faint wisp of something. I've heard it's a powerful smell but not to me.

Thanks for the great pictures.
Do you suppose the cat was chased to the coast by the fires?

Thanks, you're welcome. I never thought of that. It's certainly possible. But I know that there were already bobcats in residence here. There might be some fights going on to establish new territories. This guy is marking his territory (see the last photo), new or old.

What camera and lens did you use for these shots?

D7100 and Nikon f 5.6 200mm to 500mm lens. Both new to me and I'm really liking the combination.
