Everyone here seems to know so much and I am in awe and sometimes in the dark on understanding what you are saying in regards to photography and camera settings. I'm not so bad at composition, but really would like to take better photo. I shoot RAW.
Advice appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

*Stunning Digital Photography* by Tony Northrup. *Understanding Exposure* by Bryan Peterson. There are many other textbooks on photography that also will have much of the information you need.

Thank you, thank you Everyone.
It's refreshing to know that you posters REALLY want to help a novice like me. I know that I have to start somewhere and that you all have been where I am now. I will go for learning and experimenting with the triangle, view Utube tutorials and look into the recommended workshop videos. My husband and I were members of a photo guild but we were lost/intimidated by all the camera terms of all the experienced photographers. We never entered any photo contests at any level because the same people always won. I did analyze myself and found that my Auto photos weren't so bad after I edited them. However, I really want to make quality photos. So...I'm Jumping in again"
Thank you all for such good advice and for your unselfish sharing.
Chris

Learning Manual Mode will not automatically get you better photos but will allow you to select individual settings that may produce better results than the settings an 'Automatic' mode considered were 'best'.

My advice additional to that which has been mentioned already emphasising the understanding of how/what aperture, speed and ISO do is to practice. For practising, you can simply sit in a comfy chair outside or in a reasonably lit room indoors and shoot away.

Example, shoot an ornament, lampshade, bush, bicycle.................. whatever, take a shot to maximise DoF, adjust the other two settings to obtain good exposure, then another one to minimise DoF. Take shots of the same subjects using a high shutter speed as would be used for birds in flight and adjust the other two settings to get a good exposure. Delete, practice, delete ...........................

RAW is great...allows for much more latitude in post plus you get 16 bit color vs 8. Put the meter in spot mode and try to expose for the various parts of a scene in camera rather than try to comp from RAW. Learn how to "expose to the right" (histogram). I avoid the all-auto ("training wheels mode") mode in favor of A, S and M modes, with auto ISO sometimes. P is my least favorite of the PASM mode set.

To really understand, play and practise.

Set it it manual, rule of thumb .... shutter speed = 1/film speed at f16 in bright sunlight and then adjust to suit. So if you have ISO set at 200, then 1/200th sec at f16 on a bright and sunny day should be about right.

Learning to use MANUAL is much easier in the digital age. You can experiment, and you can see the results of your efforts right away. So, go to manual and fire away.

Will you post some links to the Trilogy, that is ISO, Aperture (AKA F-Stop) and Shutter Speed. My understanding is to keep a lower ISO setting because of NOISE in the Digital World or GRAIN in the Film World. Adjusting the other settings accordingly. Correct me nicely if
I am wrong!

Everyone has their own tips for shooting in manual. In my opinion you have to understand properly the relationship between Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO and what each of those components do to the pictures you take. Correct me if I’m wrong but you can take at least six different combinations of the above and each time get a correctly exposed picture but each of those pictures will be telling a slightly different story, think depth of field and motion. Best book I ever bought on photography that didn’t spend a load of time explaining the development of the camera and how it works is Bryan Peterson’s book Understanding Exposure which gets you in to the world of manual exposure.

If only had one book on photography it would be that one, it’s not expensive but worth its weight in gold.

Put the camera in "auto ISO" and try adjusting f stop and speed in "manual mode" to learn how things work. Simple way to get results and learn the effects.

My journey was 4 weeks auto/program mode reviewing as soon as possible the settings used by the camera while the conditions were fresh in my mind
4month Aperature Priority reviewing
4 months Shutter Priority reviewing
Than set it to Manuel and haven't looked back

Flight students use Flight simulators to practice their flying skills, you can do the same thing with a Camera Simulator. The beauty of this is you can do this on your computer, and it doesn't add shutter clicks to your camera while you are learning. Used in conjunction with you D7100 I think it would be a good way for you to learn. Here's the link on the simulator. https://camerasim.com/camerasim-pro-package/
