Dawn on the Mystery Flower

My son was given a seed last April, as a graduation present from a friend, who told him it was a zinnia. He nurtured it carefully, expecting it to grow and blossom by June. It kept growing very tall, and he supported it with a long stick and cable ties. Finally, after 8 months, it started to grow a blossom. It is now (December 17) in full bloom and is 5'9" tall! Does anyone know what it is? Is it just a tall zinnia? (I thought zinnia would be closer to the ground.)

Yes it is zinnia. They are any where from dwarf to giant. The larger ones make a good cut flower. I am not sure where you are located, but they usually bloom in about 6 -8 weeks and continue blooming until frost for me. One of the easiest and trouble free plants in most condition. Mildew some times bothers them in a wet year. I plant several every year.

Pretty shot of what looks like a Zinnia. Not sure about the height.

Thanks for the replies and compliments. It is a pretty flower, and is a testament to my son's care and protection of the only plant he has ever grown. (has been indoors since being a seed, as it was snowing last April when he started it, and now is snowing again, here in Western New York). I looked it up, and found some zinnias do grow to be around 6 feet tall.

That is the reason that it took so long to bloom. You can seed them outdoors as soon as the soil warms and they come rather quickly bloom about mid summer.

It just wouldn't give up, and it definitely is zinnia. I plant lots of them every spring, and sow seeds directly into the ground. Butterflys love them!

I grow California Giants. If you have good deep soil they can be 6 feet tall. they make butterflies and hummingbirds safe from any cats in your neighborhood

Growing your plant indoors subjected it to blue light through the shaded window which signals many plants to grow tall or elongate cells to perhaps competitively reach more light. The same plant in the sun will grow a thick and sturdy stem responding to full spectrum and be much shorter. Your picture is an amazing example of growth.
