The best mirrorless cameras are either the Hasselblads or the Fuji medium format cameras, not any of the smaller dinky toys out there.

I’ve been very disappointed with my Nikon 1 and have been looking for a really good replacement. The new Nikon Z6 and Z7 have caught my eye. But they are terribly expensive. So I am wondering if they are worth the money or if there are other great mirrorless cameras I should look at? Your thoughts.

The answer to the question in the title is: The one in your hand.

Terribly expensive? I though they were competitively priced.

There are many great mirrorless camera systems. Do some research, go to stores, handle them, decide for yourself which one is best.

I know i sometimes i have limited patience but really??!! You have to ask this question here on the forum. There are sonys, fuji’s, etc that all have very good reviews. You know how I know?? Its called google. Plus the nikon you have, i believe has a 1” sensor and the nikons you mention are full framed so of course they are more expensive. I think you need to get the basics down first, do some research and then come back with way more refined questions. Otherwise, all you will get is a whole lot of different opinions with no basis that may apply to you.

Gorgeous Cat's Eyes photo! FWIW, I ordered my Z6 with 24-70 f4 and FTZ adapter so I can use ALL of my Nikkor lenses! I also had to buy an XQD card and reader, insofar as the Z-series cameras have only one XQD card slot. But, having grown with Nikon since 1976, I'm in too deep and too happy with quality and features to look elsewhere.
I photograph people, portraits, events and documentary film, so with its built-in stabilization for my old hands are top-of-list needs for me. And, the "what you see is what you get" viewfinder and touch interface are added benefits.
I look forward to sharing . . .

I agree. Although, it was a shocker to spend that much for a membory card, but I wasn't going to go cheap after having dropped $3K on the Z6/24-70lens/adapter.

I'm following this topic with interest as I'm considering a mirrorless to ac as a backup for my D7100. I like the Sony a6000 - I know is 2014 tech but it gets good reviews and fits my budget. also, I can use my existing Nikon lenses with an adapter and that's attractive as well.

Question - I noticed a lot of sellers on the Bay tout extra batteries. Are these cameras battery hogs or do people just enjoy carrying the extra weight?

Not much more hoggish than other cameras, I kept 3 batteries (they're small) available, never really needed more than that. Usually one carried me throughout most of the day when travelling and charged them nightly.

In the end, there is no “best mirrorless Camera”, there are lots of excellent ones mentioned, and whichever one the user finds to be “best” in terms of performance, features and price for their application and needs.

I know I'll get a lot of blow-back especially from those that haven't used one lately.

Your best bet is a new smart phone. Google pixel3,is an excellent choice as are the latest offerings from Apple and Samsung.

I use a Sony a6000. 24.3mp mirrorless. Very compact even with tele 55-210mm. My travel camera in lieu of lugging my Canons and lenses. Many accessories can be bought. Amazon bundles at reasonable prices. I think you will be impressed.

If you are looking for a Full Frame Mirrorless, Sony has a five year head start on the competition with both bodies and dedicated lenses. The A7Rii is a great value at the moment at $890 new and has in-body stabilization and nearly everything you could want. Sony has been cranking out a steady stream of great lenses at several price points over the last five years and are now being joined by several third party lens manufacturers. Also there are quite a few of the dedicated FF mirrorless lenses available on the used market.

If APS-C would meet your needs (and talent), the venerable Sony A6000 is a bargain at under $500 with the kit lens.

I've been seriously thinking of purchasing the A7Rll @$1500 which I thought was tremendous value. Wow, @$890 it's almost free. Could you please tell where I can purchase at that price? Thanks.

I agree with the post about Sony being 5 years ahead of Nikon and Canon. They have terrific mirrorless cameras.
For the best price the A6300 (Their are 2 newer versions. I own is special. It has sensational IQ. The a7II is a terrific buy. The a7III is the hottest camera mirrorless
camera as is 2k. I own the a7s II a couple of years old. It is just great. Video folks use it for cinematic video.

I am a Nikon fan but it will take some time to see what they are offering against Sony, Panasonic GH5s etc.
Good luck. Think this out more.

Do you own Nikon glass? If not your choices are wide open. If so you probably want to keep using the lenses you have.

Nikon is an optics company that makes cameras, not a camera company that makes lenses. Think that out more.

Yes to JD750!
I received my Z6 and am blown away by the body and 24-70 f4. Customization and feel are wonderful, coming from a D1x, D2x, D2H, D2Hs, D700 and D750. Low light and video quality astound and I don't need more than 24+ megapixels for file size.
My only problem is that my 105 Micro 2.8 mounted via the FTZ adapter doesn't want to operate in autofocus mode. My other autofocus lenses work fine and the Micro works as expected on the other bodies.
I've reached out to Nikon and am awaiting a reply.
