Instead of the many thousands we usually get, the numbers of migrating monarchs are sharply reduced, an endangered species. I plant milkweed for them in my yard, and I am grateful I live next to a butterfly preserve where I can visit them during their usual two month hiatus here in Goleta. We have just a couple of hundred this year, but they are such stunning creatures! I love to try and photograph them in flight which is tricky in the low light of their preferred eucalyptus grove. I’ve lightened up the photos a bit to compensate for the light but the rich colors of these beauties need little embellishment.

Tremendous shots--great DOF for the butterflies and yet also good bokeh. Well done!

Fantastic series, phv and downloaded every image! I also have planted milkweed and had more stop by this season with even a few in November and may their numbers increase! Thanks for posting and very glad that I clicked on your post! Hope you and your family have a great holiday season and take care.

Wonderful images! Since I was a little girl, I have chased butterflies. Today I have nearly every cat food in my yard for the local butterflies including 3 types of milkweed. It is disturbing to see the numbers drop every year. I can count the individuals that visit throughout the summer. So very sad. I hope to get to a winter sight for these guys before it is too late.

I have been to the beaches there several times. My youngest daughter lives there. So much beauty to photograph in Cali.

It's so sad to see their decline but your photos are a wonderful record.

Thank you Swamp-Cork! I’m glad you downloaded because then you can see the detail of the delicacy of these creatures. The males have two spots lower on each wing, and the females have bolder veining. Happy holidays to you as well!
