I have the VR version. Great lens at a good price. I have used it in low light up to 24,000 ISO on my D7200 with great results.

VR is a great tool, and I've a small group of nik(18-55, 55-200, 55-300, 18-200) with VR.... and I'm just not going to tell my old 70-300 F4-5.6 D ED that it doesn't have VR, it doesn't know any better!!! I use it mostly for Still Life, plants/flowers and 275-300mm closeups of insect/lizards//dragons/tiny flowers and such (it is not a Macro lens) and get quite sharp images and great "crops". I am a mostly daytime shooter (and sunshine cooperates fairly often in Fla) so I don't try to do low light stuff with it.

I just sold mine back to Adorama to get a Nikor 200-500mm lens. The 70-300mm took great images, but I was using it with a DX camera and the autofocus feature was too slow for my purposes. Also, I wanted extra reach for wildlife and birding.

Pablo, when I saw your mother of the bride picture it stopped me in my tracks. She looks exactly like my mother
who passed away in 2003. When I saw it I wondered how she would be here on Hedgehog. Small world as they say.....

I have had the 70 to 300 af-s VR for many, many years and use it on a full-frame camera. I have probably taken tens of thousands of pictures on it. Before buying that lens, i researched it heavily and compared it to many other comprable lenses, and the only consistent complaint about that lens was it was a bit soft in the 250 to 300 millimeter range. A previous poster responded that you could fix this in post, and he is correct. It is a good day light lens. I don't rely on VR much to use this lens in the dark. I have f 2.8 lens for that. But for about $300 and rhe ability to use it heavily knowing that it will give consistent quality images, it's a good low-cost purchase.

Took mine out today for golden hour. D7500 Af-s 70-300 4.5-5.6 ED VR G (the "expensive" fx model)
This GBH was about 60 yards away, hiding in the shadows. I used 1.3 of negative exposure compensation and here are a couple of results. Download to check for sharpness.

I purchased the FX version AF-P 70-300mm ED VR lens a couple of months ago from Best Buy, $599. I use it with my full frame D600 camera. It's a very good lens. I shoot nature photography and when I take a picture of a woodland scene I want the tree branches to be sharp, and they are. I've also noticed that there is virtually no chromatic aberrations with this lens, unlike some other lenses when zoomed out with highlights in the scene. If you're using it on a DX camera it will become a 105-450mm equivalent lens. For the price I would recommend it.

I have one that I was just getting ready to post in the for-Sale section. If you decide that you want one I will give you a deal as I no longer have a Nikon camera and have no use for it. PM me if you have any interest. Thanks, Charles

I am interested if cly72642 is not. Pm me

I have it and it’s not too bad. I’ve used it in very low light settings and it’s just ok. It’s much better outdoors in natural light. I will say that I have the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 and it’s much better (although not as long) and it’s way, way more more expensive. Hope this helps.

I have seen some tout the AF-P version of this lens as more desirable than the one your asking about. Let me encourage you to do apply due diligence. The AF-P version has limitations as to which Nikon cameras it will work on. Nikon has this AF-P version for $149.95 full retail presently. They are trying to unload this inferior lens as sales have not met their expectations. The AF-S version is $499.95 from Nikon. Quality between the two is evident by the price and result. I've owned the AF-S version for years and was tempted by the price of the AF-P but after trying one and noticing the differences I was convinced NOT to change. However, if you want what the AF-P offers which is a very low price and are not concerned about other elements of photography then go for it.

The AF-P version for $149. is the DX, non VR model. If you are looking for a DX 70-300 the AF-P with VR is the one to get and you can get it gray market (for example from Walmart) for under $150. also. Or pay twice as much for a Nikon USA copy with full warranty. At the long end, it's 1 third of a stop slower than the FX versions at f6.3 instead of f5.6. It's a very, very good lens for the money and much sharper than the old FX 70-300 versions at the long end. Check compatibility carefully. For example, works fine with D7100, 7200, 7500, D500, not at all with D7000 and earlier.

If you want a 70-300 for FX the AF-P version of that lens is terrific, long end aperture if f5.6 and Nikon USA price $600. Much better built than the DX version, but not sharper at the long end. Also much heavier than the DX version. I would only buy it if you have a compatible FX camera such as D750 or D8XX. I own each of these 70-300 lenses and have tested and used them all.

As Nikkor lenses go this is a keeper and there is a good used one and very nicely priced one eBay right now being sold by Goodwill, Maine at auction. The Goodwill operation in Maine is very fortunate to get very nice merchandise donated by caring people and are an excellent used photo equipment source.
