I have a compact pair of binoculars from Nikon that are pretty good and a better pair from Hawke- mid range ones- that are bright and clear. Both sets are 8x32 and 8x42- no 10s.
You probably made the wise choice, I bought a 10-50 in a PX in Korea. really good ones but but just standing and holding I get too much vibration. I need to rest my elbows against something.

The Canon IS binocs are awesome. Check the lens section of the Canon refurb site. $440 for 10x30 IS, $680 12x26 IS
Interesting to see that Fujifilm makes binoculars. Anyone have experience with them? I know they make great camera products; I shoot a XT20 with multiple lenses. Love them.

If I want to see something at a distance, I really want to SEE it. My first binoculars (teenager)were Zeiss 8x40. Next, Weiss 20x60. Plane-spotting, birding, sailing - extremely useful, bright images. It took practice and hand-eye co-ordination to keep them steady, but soon I was able to get on target within one second. My favorite pair now (age 78), Spalding 30x80; rings of Saturn & moons of Jupiter clearly visible!
Regarding steadiness, my philosophy: don't give in to aging; fight it with exercise and determination!
My wife and I each have a pair of 8x42 Vortex Diamondback binoculars which have served us well and have nothing but good things to say about their service and think all purchases from them are guaranteed for life. I just received our copy of the 2019 January-February copy of Bird Watcher's Digest yesterday and one of the subscribers were really praising them about being so helpful and going the extra mile to make sure that they quickly received the left cup assembly which had been lost and they were planning a trip to the Dominican Republic in two weeks and really wanted to take their Vipers with them. After a local dealer gave them the Vortex telephone number they had the replacement in two days, and the Vortex warranty covers just about everything except theft!
Nikon 8x30 Prostaff 7S, or 10x42. Awesome optics and roof prisms.
Thanks to each of you for your comments, recommendations, and personal preferences. Gives me some good data as i continue my search. 😀 Vera
I would consider used Carl Zeiss Jena binoculars from the former East Germany. Optically they are first-rate but cosmetically they are not quite as nice as the former West German Carl Zeiss binoculars. The East German ones were the postwar continuation of the Carl Zeiss Jena binoculars made in pre-WWII Germany.
