There is an exterminator that comes in to the store where I work and as I was talking to one of the ladies I was working with I mentioned I was going to the library after work and the exterminator told us that he has had to spray a couple of libraries in the territory he works. Thinking he was trying to be funny I Googled bedbugs and libraries and several articles came up about libraries in North Carolina that have been infested and have had to be shut down for several days while being treated.

I hope the person that was bit by the rat didn't have to undergo rabies shots.

No, we were concerned about that, but he was taken to an E.R. for treatment and they said that would not be necessary. We could have provided the rat for testing if they felt it was needed.

Did the articles you read speculate on where the bedbugs came from? Here in Dallas there was a highrise low rent apartment building run by the housing authority that had to be closed because the bedbugs were so bad that they could not be exterminated.

They are brought in from books or bags of library patrons. They borrow books and the bugs crawl into the bindings and pages and when returned will start moving in search of food. They can go up to 5 months without eating.

Apparently bed bugs don't transmit disease...small comfort that! Our experience was that "gift" books were the likely sources of bugs of all sorts. Folks cleaned out the attic or worse, the basement, and were sure the library would treasure these moldy items.

The rat story could explain why many libraries have a pet cat or two....
