I have a nice big ol Canon 6d with some expensive lenses but really wanting something to keep with me all the time. I’m with Fire/Rescue and miss documenting lots of stuff because my 6D is safely at home. Thinking mirrorless due to size and would like maybe one good general lens with some zoom. I don’t want to spend a small fortune due to the possibility of it getting stole, lost, damaged, destroyed or who knows what. I always shot Canon but for this possible purchase I’m not looking for a certain brand, just something to document with. Thanks guys!

You would not want to keep a camera in your vehicle. In the summertime the heat will destroy it.

I go smaller. I keep my RX100vi in my go-bag to have with me most of the time. Great pics, very small, no extra lenses, and battery recharges in camera with a USB cable from almost anywhere (even a solar panel when I'm in a multi day hike or bike ride).

Better to abuse your camera than to not use it at all! Batts are the main issue with heat, they can be pocketed if blistering hot. (With terminal cap on!) Cold weather condensation/ frost is an issue with the rest. A "buffering" case is some protection, a towel wrap if nothing else. The floor is usually a tad cooler. I have kept various "second cameras" in vehicles for years and they have all lived to tell tales. Yes, its riskier. But so is fire fighting. Smoke residue may be your real concern! There, the weather Olys make a lot of sense.

First digital camera I bought new was a Konica/Minolta Dimage Z6 a six megapixel camera. Cost was about $300.00. It had a 14x zoom and small enough to fit in a jacket to. I still use it and keep it in my car. It is a tough little camera, been dropped rained on and bounced around. Still working great
You can pick one up on eBay for less than $50.00. Might suit your needs it's not mirrorless but it takes decent pictures.

Leaving a camera in a hot car during summer, or during sub-freezing weather is going to ruin the battery and, very likely, the electronic innards. Place it where you can't miss it, when you leave the house.

Look at the Panasonic G85 it has 5 axis stabilization magnesium front body weather sealed 4K video the low pass filter has been removed for better image quality. $800 will get the camera and a 12-60mm lens can’t beat it for the price!

A few thoughts. The Oly Tough would be perfect. But I caution people taking photos while on duty. Patient confidentiality for fire and rescue and potential evidence for cops. We had cops taking photos only to have to divulge the existence those pics during testimony or discovery. In fact there is a court case out there where cop was using personal cell phone for duty related matters and was compelled to turn over phone records to a defendant. So I’d check agency policy and limit pics to matters not related to work.

The Olympus TG-5 would fit your budget and is as weatherproof as you can get, but you may need to add a telephoto lens. The Pixel smartphones offer Night Sight, which is great for low-light conditions (the app comes with Pixel 3 and can be added at no charge to Pixel 1 and 2), but again you may need a telephoto accessory, and new would exceed your budget. The Sony a6000 fits your budget, offers better IQ, and provides greater flexibility with interchangeable lenses, but is not weatherproof. I have a Pixel 2 and an a6000 -- love them both -- and am getting a TG-5 for Christmas for underwater and macro shots. Good luck -- and stay safe!

Good heavens?

Why leave anything of value in a car?

The camera I would leave in a car is a broken one that I no longer want. And I would leave the doors unlocked so that there is no damage to the car. I'd leave it on the front seat in plain view, too. Otherwise, a cellphone should suffice, or something small and pocketable like a Sony RX100m5 or m6. But it stays in my pocket until picture taking time.

What do you consider a small fortune. In my casual reading most mirrorless' run above $600 even for the older Sony a6000. In our objective would you have time for tending to composition and framing the shots. If your purpose is to record facts, what about a pocketable.

Canon SX720HS is always in my vehicle in a zippered hard pouch. Lots of zoom and options. Keep it in the locked glove box and it works great everytime I pull it out. Takes great pics too. No need for lenses with the zoom and if it gets overheated or frozen it's not a big loss.

Re: resq2 Needs mirror less cameras. One of the cameras I use may be a good bet for you-the panasonic lumix FZ300. Its lens is a constant f2.8 and has a 35mm equivalent 600 zoom. It shoots raw and jpeg. It weighs only one and a half pounds. It has numerous features, so it is like a DSLR with one attached lens. Image quality is good. In freezing weather wrap it up in a blanket. It sells new for $400. Davidb1879
