Paying for your artwork
I went out to my nieces barn to watch her ride.... I got a shot of myself, my daughter, and niece reflected in a horses eye. I loved it and a couple of others saw it. My sister asked if I can send a .jpg to the trainer of this horse as she wants to give the photo to the owner. I told her a print would have to be purchased, as I was not sending a .jpg out for this person to do whatever they wanted with it...it's my artwork. She and the trainer were offended they had to pay (seriously, I only charged her $20 for a print) How do others deal with this? I'll do shots for family, will donate pics for animal fundraisers, etc. but not randomly email a file to someone I don't know. Thoughts...?

It seems to me that family and friends wants the world from us when it comes to photo's. They do not see anything wrong with using your work without paying. I see nothing wrong with you charging someone you do not know. Stick to your guns.
Congratulations, Debbie Ann, you've found 2 people out of 7 billion who want something but do not wish to pay for it. Beware: there are more of this sort of person, but take heart, there others, too, who are happy to pay for what they want. Nice shot!

I dunno...but for 20 bucks...I'd look at it like a lunch for a potential client...or clients...you never know. Maybe crank up the price and write if off on your tax's.
Well doe st he trainer provide lessons for free? Trian the horse for free etc. I think you get the point. It is a fabulous picture, I might give them a 4x6 (only because I am thrilled whenever someone likes my work), but no jpeg to turn it into whtever their heart desires.
I believe that everyone who has responded has it it perfectly, you deserve to be paid for your talent! Nice photograph!
did you get a release from the owners horse?
if $20 was a problem....they would have found something wrong also for free.
walk away. it's your photo.
It seems to me that it wasn't worth $20 to offend your sister and niece...I think you're a cheap SOB. Now to the right thing and say you're sorry...

That's the way the business is going. $20. If you make your living from photography you are shooting yourself in the foot.
Working for family is usually not good business. If you are a professional photographer and making your living at it then you might provide a low resolution JPG with a watermark and send it on, if the horse owner wants a hi-res for printwork, they should pay you for it. Make your sister a print and give it to HER.

Hi Debbie Ann,
I think you are right to charge if you ask me you are not charging enough, what is the matter with people. Ask the stable for a riding lesson and see if its for free, i think we both know the answer. You are doing nothing wrong stick by your guns
Interesting thread. I get it all the time when I shoot events. People are getting so used to having everyone forward them a copy from their iphone that they don't see anything wrong with asking for you to do the same. And, then get offended when you say "no", or you put a price on it. I guess that the best answer is to be, and act, professional when you tell them that there is a price for your work...or as others have suggested, ask them for a free lesson.
My 2 cents, I'm sorry, but I think $20 is a heck of a deal for the jpeg.
Thanks everyone for the input. I don't do this for a living, and am flattered if someone thinks enough of my photo to want a copy of it.
And no, Flash, I did not get a release from the owners horse. She was the recipient of the photo at the end of all this....
