There are several phases (as best I remember what they are called) of Dark-eyed Juncos with different colorings. In the past they were considered to be different species but have since been combined into one species with different phases. For example, Grey-headed juncos, Oregon Juncos, etc. I don't know who decides on such things.

I moved from Idaho to Colorado earlier this year and some of the Juncos here are different, such as the Grey-headed Juncos that I don't recall seeing where I lived in Idaho. They are lovely little birds and I greatly appreciate how they clean up the seeds on the ground below the feeders. They seem to prefer feeding on the ground rather than the feeders and sometimes do little hops as they scratch the ground. I enjoyed the photo.

Thanks for that info. Reminds me to get out there and refill the feeder...they cleaned me out last night.

I see in my Audobon book that there are many slate and gray headed dark eyed Juncos. The ones that I get in ID mostly have a black head.

Thanks very much James.

Some birds take direction very well when trying to pose them while others just fly away.

Good morning. Thanks all for viewing and commenting.

Wanderer, around here I see shades of grey sometimes bordering on blue. Some have very distinctive roufus colored sides.

Where now live there are many Gray-headed Juncos and they have a good size rufous patch over their backs. BTW, in looking back over the Juncos listed in my bird ID guides some use the term "race" instead of "phase" so they are the Grey-headed race in that guide.

An excellent shot, altho our little friend here looks like rather than another meal, he could use a little time on a treadmill, lol.

You know Randy, I think they may have some low calorie peanut butter. I'm afraid if I put a treadmill out there the Mourning Doves would just sleep on it all day.

Thanks very much for commenting.
