Well, I would say that ALL FILES can be READ as TEXT FILES, should you choose to -- and be able to -- open the file with text editing software. Many of the data bytes in an image file, particularly those in the header region of the file, are arranged in byte groups that conform to ASCII characters, and sometimes the software begins reading the data at the right point to actually decipher part of the header text to generate sensible words, like "A d o b e P h o t o s h o p E l e m e n t s A d o b e P h o t o s h o p E l e m e n t s 3 . 0". Note that if the software reading the file had shifted the byte frame by even a single bit you would not have seen that line of text. Were you just lucky? Who knows.

I was hoping to be able to go the other way and generate "Op Art" or other interesting "abstract pictures" by opening a non-image file with an imaging program, but I could not force my imaging programs to open files they could not recognize (by the extension). As stated earlier, the Preview application is smart enough to actually decipher even a spreadsheet and present it for viewing; you can't do any math, but you can view the data values in proper layout.

Isn't the "type" or "nature" of a file really defined by its content rather than by the software that can open the file? There are many types of "image" files (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, BMP) that can be opened by a variety of applications (Lightroom, Photoshop, Capture One, LightZone, etc) because those applications recognize the standard file extensions that define the structure of the digital data in the file. Regardless of the software that reads the file, the displayed result is an image, which is what the data in the file is intended to convey.

The same rationale applies to "raw" files. Clearly they are not executable application files (.exe), or system files, or configuration files, or library files, or spreadsheet files, or text files, or presentation files, or music files, or movie files, or... the list goes on. Raw files contain digital information that somehow represents the light scene that impinged on the sensor in the camera. Given the right instructions of how to parse and interpret the raw data, a computer program can read the file and turn it into the image that the photographer wanted to capture.

The fact that a "raw" file does not (yet) conform to an agreed-upon standard on how the data should be organized does not exclude it from being an image file. Every camera manufacturer provides a "roadmap" of how their raw data is arranged so that software that has the capability of understanding the roadmap can open that camera's raw image file.

So I am in the camp that a raw file IS an image file... 'cause it's not a text, or spreadsheet, or music, or html, or... file.
Let's just beat this horse to death until it can n... (show quote)

Well, you obviously feel strongly the need to be viewed as correct, so have at it.

But a raw file can be better considered like an unprocessed piece of film in the analog days - not an image until it is processed. If that don't float your boat, then you are beyond hope. ANd I shan't bother trying to clarify things here.

We are all but shadows on the walls of the cave.

Or, in modern cosmological theory, a hologram inside the sphere of reality (or something like that)

Or, as the 1960s comedy satire team, The Conception Corporation might say, “Like wow, man, what’s the number of that ‘acid rescue service’ again?

Sometimes UHH just gets amusingly pointless...

Well, you maintain wrong.

RAW simply does not fit the standard of being a "transportable" image file.

Gee, I thought EVERY file is "transportable" as long as I have it on a memory stick or CD-ROM or removable hard drive. Oh, wait a minute, even the files on my desktop computer are transportable if I pick it up and move it to another room. And come to think of it, even the files on a data cloud are transportable if I have enough Mack trucks to move the server farm.

OK, sorry, bad pun... and I think I am almost done on this topic.

Final thought based on the philosophical question, "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

To those who argue that a JPEG is an image file but a raw file is not, I would ask, "Is a JPEG an image file if it is not opened and viewed?" If both file types are successfully opened, will they will not both be seen as images? And if they are not opened, how can we know what lurks inside?

Actually, this statement is incorrect. JPEG and TIF and other image files are indeed as you describe, but a raw file is most definitely not.

Read my explanation above and you should be able to see the difference. In short, whereas an image file denotes specific colors for each pixel position, a raw file does no such thing (except for the Leia M monochrome, which does not have the Bayer pattern of filters above the photosites and thus can only produce a B&W image directly). Each "pixel" on the chip only reads either R or G or B; it is the job of the demosaicing software to decide (interpret - as there is no simple lookup table as there is with JPEG) what the particular color of a particular dot in the image should be.

And for those whose delicate sensibilities I offended when using the term "coalesced", let me apologize profusely - it's just that the term demosaic seems to be too complex for some.

Okay f8lee, I reread your explanation and I don't think we are that far apart. raw data is just that, data. It's the raw interpreter that contains the instruction set. However each photocell in a pixel can return a value for R, G, and B, whether they're covered by a filter or not. The filter does not remove all the other frequencies, just most of them. It's up to the software to decide what it's looking at. It can ignore the other two values or not, but the values are available. I suspect that the differences in raw interpreters has to do with how the other values are ignored or not. I do understand that the process is way more involved than that and your post does go a ways to explain how complicated the path is to that final color value displayed on your screen.
