the focus seems a bit soft on the 2nd and 3rd pic, the first is sharp where it needs to be, but just a bit too much goin' on in the picture ..see if you can crop it some, top, left and bottom and see how ya' like it..thanks for sharing and keep shooting..

I cropped it before uploading it put it didnt stay cropped. You're right about the cropping. The softness was by design. I like slighted blurry effects. Thanks for you comments.

i have so many dumb questions i am liable to be thrown out of this forum - but how would someone make it better focused, i am - i guess - like in my case - assuming that you used autofocus and pushed halfway down - do others do that or do most "real photographers" use manual focus on the lens?
there were a couple of questions in this paragraph? i need lots of help!

debbie..another factor in focus is the F stop..or aperture opening..the bigger the opening..smaller number..the less area of your picture will be in focus..in a given distance..I think the quick formula is subject and 1/3 in front of and 1/3 in back of the subject..and when you autofocus don't let the camera pick the "dot" to focus with, read the manual and find out how to change the focus point

Debbie, the person giving you the advice about focusing is really a nice person. And seems to know their stuff. Good advice.

bstdizier,
Mohonk is one of my favorite places on the planet. I got to spend a week there at a conference recently. the interior has unlimited alccoves and architectural details as subjects. and the flower garden "maze" is incredible when in full bloom.
These are great representatrions of the place. Rocco

Rocco, it was March when we were there. Not too much in bloom. I have some amazing pictures of this gorgeous place. I'll be glad to share. You were so lucky to have been there for an entire week. I was there for only a day.

I like the blurry effect but I think you focused in a little too much on the cat shot. The cat's mouth is important and should be sharp also. Otherwise a really nice capture.
