Well done, my favourite lens for wildlife

Rick

Thanks
I also have a Canon 100-400L Mk II, it is a bit sharper and faster on the AF. But I have two bodies and now that I got the G2 (I used to have a G1) I have a long lenses for each again.
If I am going for the most reach it will be the G2 and 80D. For versatility (it focuses to less than 3') and absolute best IQ it will be the 100-400L and my 5DIV.
In the mean time I am having fun learning the G2 and how it works on both bodies.

Gorgeous Robert! We have hawks fly thru every now, and they are so majestic. I know how one of the other posters feels when she mentioned about not feeding the birds due to the hawks, I too feel bad to see them take off with a bird in their talons, but it's the circle of life and I have to look at it as such. We did have a hawk get a baby squirrel last spring, and I felt really bad about that one, but my dogs had also done in a squirrel or two, I keep telling myself, it's the circle of life. It's a fabulous photograph and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Yes, it is part of nature and life. Being from farming country I am still amazed at some "city people" who don't realize where that burger or steak (not to mention KFC or bacon for breakfast) they are enjoying came from.

Yesterday a young squirrel (stupid, not long for this world variety) came down out of the tree next door and sat on the fence watching the hawk and crows in their power play for yard rights. Lucky for the squirrel the hawk was busy watching the murder of crows as they gathered to chase him off.

My little Jack Russell has only managed to get a few tail hairs*, but she has killed possums in they yard and she does sometimes snack on fledgling birds. I mean, when a fledgling flies into something and breaks its neck then falls six inches in front of her nose she did what any red blooded little Jack Russell would do, enjoy a free protein snack.

*She is a great squirrel fitness trainer. Our squirrels are in great condition for running, jumping and climbing. Some times they go to the top of the old swing set and sass Tara. One of these days the hawk will be nearby and snatch one off the swing set.

I noticed the birds weren't around again so I put out some fresh feed and peanuts. Then while reading and waiting for them to come around I heard a panic take off by a bunch of doves and looked out in time to see the doves leaving at warp speed and this hawk zoomed in, landed on the old swing set, moved to a few different places on the set then went to the fence on the East side of the yard. I shot over 50 frames, some with flash, some without then ended up deleting all but 19 for one reason or another - mostly focus or pose. Then all afternoon the hawk and a group of crows kept trading places in the yard. Less than 3 crows the hawk moved in, get up to about 5 or 6 crows and they moved in. Every so often some little birds or a few doves would come in under cover of the crows who were busy looting all the peanuts. This hawk has been hanging out in the trees in the yards on my block and scaring off the other birds.
Here he is setting on the fence looking down at the potted plants, bird bath and feeder like he is thinking about why he missed getting a meal this time.
5DIV, Tamron 150-600 G2 @ 600, 1/400 @ f/8.0, ISO 1250 hand held at about 60' without flash, Center point AF with assist and spot meter - AF and meter both put on the hawk's body. Lite by warm afternoon sunlight from the right as oriented in this picture.

Great shot and great bird.

Whenever I don't hear the birds, I know that one of our neighborhood hawks is in the immediate area. Several times I disturb their apparent perch, the fence in at the back, so they fly off, often within feet of me stepping out of the back door. One of these years I will set up my camera to capture their antics. We did have a Cooper's stop by a few years ago. But we are on their border of their visiting area.

Great shot and great bird. br br Whenever I don't... (show quote)

Thanks

Besides the hawks waiting to ambush birds at my feeders the local crows and even a few ravens have taken a liking to my peanuts. They don't seem to worry much about the hawk, in general they are as big or bigger than a Cooper's and outnumber the hawk(s) - I have seen two of the young hawks in the trees on the block at once, but usually it is just one.

This morning I thought Santa and the Raindeer were practicing landings and tap dancing on the flat roof of the family room where my "office" is located. Went outside and looked up - three crows playing and eating the peanuts they had just snatched from the feeders.
