You'll need to install the EOS Utility software that came with the camera plus the USB cable that came with the camera as well. Then all you do is connect the USB cable to the computer, then connect the camera to the USB and open the EOS Utility program and from there click "Control Camera" and then "Camera Settings\Remote Shooting" I don't have the XTI, I have the 7D, but I'm sure it's almost if not exactly the same. Make sure you have the recent updated version of the EOS Utility program. You can download it at Canon's website. I hope this helps, let me know if you need any further assistance.
its says my camera is not compatible. its a canon xti?

Ah, that may be because your Canon XTi (aka Canon 400D) does not have live view (and it does not have video).
I believe that all that you can transmit to your monitor is what can appear on the LCD.
At least I thnk that is so...?
yes my camera does not have live view so it wont work.. first i have to upgrade my income (lol on disability) then my camera for this to work lol. hey but thanks for trying guys:-}
AN XTi has an LCD window but only shows the present camera settings, the menu display and review of photos already taken. To see what the camera sees you have to look thru a view finder. I have searched the internet using every terminology known to man and and this is what I found - checked it out and see if this helps you.

What this does is play your camera recorder thru the computer and you take pictures of the video scene your camera is running. Now - I have an XTi also and used the video setting one time AWHILE ago and it ate the battery pretty fast - like within a half hour. So have spare batteries handy. Good luck.
Outsider is correct. There is a utility that comes with your camera that will allow you to tether your camera to a computer and set up your shots before taking the picture. I don't have an XTI but I have used it with several Canons up through the 50D, I haven't had an opportunity to use it with my 7D but I fully expect it will work just fine.
As Outsider said, just look through the CDs that came with your camera. I don't have the CD with me but I seem to remember the label was black and white.
Good shootin'
Jim
I made a mistake - the camera I was thinking of was my S3 PowerShot - I'm so sorry. I have an XTi also but there is no video setting on it.
please stop now. the xti will not do this............
