This picture was taken with my wife's point and shoot and it shows the viability of the little cameras. The current I-Phones are even better. (But you're not getting my DSLR away from me!)

In good light (provided it's not too extreme) a P&S will give a more expensive camera a good run for its money. But the fact remains that small sensor cameras do have limitations which become more obvious in more trying circumstances. That could be something as simple and as unavoidable as bright clouds in a landscape shot.
