This is my first post in the gallery, but the recent posts of d2b2 had me going through my pictures of Italy. The first two were taken in 2005 and the third was taken in 2012. On our tour in 2012, we were told that the different holes in the walls had meaning, the square holes were used to hold wooden beams that would support "floors" where the homeless would live/sleep (I'm pretty sure that this was done while the Colosseum was vacant). The holes dug in between the stones were used to steal the lead that was used between the stones (I believe that the lead was used to hold marble onto the stones).

The lead was the structural tie between the stones to keep the building together.

I had originally posted that I wasn't sure what the lead was used for, but my wife remembered hearing that it was used to hold the marble to the stone. Thanks for looking and the information.
