I have tires on my car that are VR rated, but my car still won't do 200 plus miles per hour!

With good conditions, the 7100 will be hard pressed to exceed roughly 70mbs, so a faster card means nothing and the buffer will quickly load up anyway. If I am incorrect, hopefully someone can correct me.

I'm not shooting the NBA or Formula 1, so I'd be happy with six or seven shot bursts at anywhere close to 6 FPS. Can't find the write speed in the manual, but that listed buffer capacity should be fine.

LOL, worked well for me and I rarely shot CH! I didn't want to part with it and did not have to when my wife decided to take ownership.

BTW, 14B drops you to max 5fps and slower shutter speeds and VR can take a toll as well.

I'm good with that. The grandson in question is only nine, but he's got a pretty good slapshot. Older grandson has one last football season at the HS level, but will probably play college ball somewhere. Younger granddaughter cheeleads and plays soccer, youngest grandson is an engineer, not an athlete, at least at this point. It is sad that the nearest ones are a thousand miles away, the furthest three times that distance. The time is so fleeting.

My wife and I are both pretty avid photographers, and when we started in the DSLR game, by accident, almost four years ago, we decided that we would either have to share a single FF outfit, or try to develop two DX/APS outfits based on our individual needs and preferences (She is retired, and gets to spend a LOT more time with the grands, so we are apart several months a year). We moved from D50 to D3200s, and now I've gone to the D7100. She's got the Sigma 18-300, which she loves, a Nikon fisheye, a Nikon Macro, a Nikon 35mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8. I generally carry the Sigma 10-20, Nikon 18-70, Nikon 70-300, and Nikon 50mm 1.8. We both have Neewer flashes, tripods, and other gear, and matching Billingham Large bags to tote it all around. I figure I owe her at least a D7100 upgrade before I buy anything more than a memory card for myself!

It's actually been a lot of fun assembling our kit, and doing it on a budget as well. Now if only I had more time to spend taking pictures with her.

My wife got a D3100 in 2011 and I took a couple shots when heading out of Yellowstone in 2012. We do not share well! I started with a 7000 and then a 7100, and ended up with a 500 and the 850. She does not like changing lenses and enjoys the Tam 18-140 she slyly indicated she was interested in. I mostly use a 24-70 and 70-200 2.8's or a 200-500. I'm unsteady, wife will attest to that, and shoot off a mono, tripod or body pod most of the time. Too much stuff....I'm in the process of inventory and some items are going to be hitting the road!

I have had some success with a 24-120 with kids sports, but usually the 70-200 is hard to beat.

We're headed for the Everglades for a week next month and then to Yellowstone for a month in June, but she does not have the patience for my birding efforts.

Enjoy!

I have not been able to find the top end mem write speed of any of my Nikon bodies. Can you tell me where you got the 70mbs figure?

I don't remember exactly where I read that, but there are several card tests with many different brands showing that max speed as a rough average.

Check out this Nikon link and look at the frame rate info: https://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d7100/spec.htm
"Approximate frame advance rate
JPEG and 12-bit NEF (RAW) images recorded with DX (24x16) selected for image area: CL 1 to 6 fps, CH 6 fps
JPEG and 12-bit NEF (RAW) images recorded with 1.3x (18x12) selected for image area: CL 1 to 6 fps, CH 7 fps
14-bit NEF (RAW) images recorded with DX (24x16) selected for image area: CL 1 to 5 fps, CH 5 fps
14-bit NEF (RAW) images recorded with 1.3x (18x12) selected for image area: CL 1 to 6 fps, CH 6 fps"

LOL, use the 1.3 crop mode to get 1 to 6 FPS.

Nikon comparison between D7100 and D7200. Look under "Release Mode" for buffer info: https://cdn-4.nikon-cdn.com/e/Q5NM96RZZo-YRYNeYvAi9beHK4x3L-8joW7yUnybX4TANUFk0STA8w==/PDF/D7200-D7100_Comparison_Sheet_en.pdf

Same specs I have seen, but nowhere does it list the top write speed to the mem card. Here's my thought: a 14 bit lossless compressed raw file is 28.5MB, and the frame rate is 5 fps per the D7100 spec sheet. So, that's 28.5MB / image x 5 images / sec = 142.5MB / sec. My mem card's top end is 95MB / sec and the camera body computer probably can't write at 142.5MB / sec anyway, but that's what I don't know, the true write speed of the camera. What happens is the buffer fills up and the camera slows down until the buffer starts to empty into the mem card. I would really like to know what the top end write speed to the mem card is. If its lower than the 95MB/s of my current mem cards, I'm wasting money. If it's faster, than I would like to buy a faster memory card to get the full performance out of my camera.

Bingo~

That was exactly what I was thinking. I'd rather spend my money on many things other than SD cards. If my camera can make use of the extra card speed, I don't mind spending for it, but $300 for a card, if your camera won't write that fast, seems insane. It's like putting those 200MPH tires on your Hyundai. I do wonder why the information on camera body write speed is so hard to find....

Part of my point was indeed people are wasting money with super cards that exceed the camera capabilities.

Check out the San Disk site for their recommendations on cards.

Look at the last link from Nikon and in particular the size of the buffer portion I pointed out. Also, did you find any cards that the camera can write more than the average 70mbs I stated?

Maybe Nikon doesn't want to spell everything out, but it is quite apparent that under certain conditions, including file sizes and other stated criteria, that the supposed 6fps capability is for a second or so.

For real happiness, buy a D500 or D850 and ante up ridiculous money for XQD cards!

Again, please give me the reference where you got the 70MB/sec number. I've got to believe the D500 is far faster than that as I can hold the shutter down at 10fps writing 20.1 MP 14 bit raw lossless compressed files for quite a long time. Same story with my D850, but at 6 fps writing 45 MP 14 bit raw lossless compressed files.

Are you not reading any of my replies? I made a statement and answered your query. I'm not trying to convince you of anything, but have provided a couple decent links for contemplation. I have many thousands of shots with the 7100, 500 and 850 with several different cards, so I need not be convinced of too much regarding their capabilities.
