Traveling to Jordan and Israel end of month. Having been to Israel several times I know the reach on my LX100 will be somewhat short. Previously used everything from film to d7100 which has been sold. Problem is that there are many areas where my feet will not get me close enough to the subject so being a human zoom doesn’t work. I don’t print anything larger than 8x10 and currently don’t do any pp. I love the LX100 because of the size and weight plus it turns out excellent quality shots. Just that sometimes the length is a little short. .What would be an alternative to my current camera? I don’t want to carry extra lenses. Thanks in advance for the help.

Don't forget to add the weight of a bulletproof vest. Have a good trip. My niece her two children and her husband are going in January. Her mother is very concerned.

This is a safe trip. And an exciting one. I have said this before The Sony RX10 series I have the III the 5 is amazing 24 600mm great video and stills.
Zeiss lens is really amazing a bridge camera. The size of a small DSLR. I also like the RX100 have the 4 they are up to the 6.
The Lumix is a good camera. I never to to Petra (Jordan) sorry I missed I was close on the Israeli border.
Travel safe. Enjoy.

Recent events lead me to conclude it is not as you say "a safe trip"

Gene,

I travel with an LX100 like you. My wife travels with a Panasonic ZS100. It has a little smaller sensor, but much more telephoto. Image quality is such that, once printed or otherwise finished for viewing, there is no significant difference. Her's are often better than mine, but that might be because she is a better photographer.

My wife shoots JPEG with her ZS100 and does little (if any post processing). Her prints to even larger than 8x10 are very nice. She uses PaintShop Pro mostly as a printing utility.

The ZS100 is more "pocketable" than the LX100 because the lens retracts further.

With the LX100 and ZS100 menus being nearly identical, it would be an obvious choice for you.

I've read that there is a little more telephoto reach in the newer ZS200, but maybe a very slight reduction in image quality.

Bill

I have the DMC-ZS100 and it does well, even with the smallish sensor. The DC-ZS200 has an even longer reach, if you need it.

If you have misgivings about the sensor size (1") rent one and try it for yourself.

Been to Israel, loved it and never felt unsafe....think Paris, Berlin, London as far worse

However, always maintain situational awareness no matter where you go overseas

Can't go wrong with the Sony or Panasonic, both great cameras and will cover what you need

Not a problem. My sister lives in Jerusalem and she says no problem. The State Dept rates the danger level of both Israel and Jordan bot a 2 out of 5. 5 being the most dangerous. Im Sure parts of Chicago ar a 5! Tell Mom not to worry.

Shooting RAW limits the range to 75 mm. But if you just shoot jpegs, the telephone range is 150 mm, which works great.

My cell service gets me farther than 150mm.

Welcome, BZ! Gotta watch the auto-correct. Sometimes they can get pretty funny. You have up to an hour to correct your posts. Look under what you posted for “Edit” options. That disappears after an hour.

Another tip is to use “Quote Reply” as i have done so we know which post you are addressing.
