I'm curious as to what lens most people use on their D 810's. I may be only dreaming but I'm going to run it by my chief financial officer about upgrading from my D7200 and I'm looking at the D810. I see it most often paired with the 24-120. That seems short as I use the 18-200 on my D 7200. Any opinions would be appreciated.

It depends on what I am photographing. Anything from a wide angle to a long Tele lens

The 24-120 has been my go to lens for many years. Used it on my D3, D4, D810 and now my D850. Remember with the resolution of the D850 you can crop in pretty tight. Also, not sure if there is a tele converter for it but you may consider one of those too.

My 24-70 f/2.8 is my walk around lens and the one used most often. I have a good selection of primes as well in the bag when out and about as well as 17-35 and 70-200 zooms. When I was shooting with a D700 I used a AF 28-70 f/2.8 with equally great results. Personally I won’t use variable aperture zoom lenses because they lose light way too fast. PS all of my glass is Nikkor.

Nikon lenses in order of overall sharpness in my experience:
1 24-70 f/2.8
2. 24-120 f4
3. 28-300
Notice that the longer the zoom range, the less sharp they become.
Compromises were made in achieving this range.
I shoot a lot of events and portraits.
The 24-70 I use when sharpness is critical or I need that extra stop of light. (I don’t have any modern primes)
The 24-120 is on the camera most of the time and it’s really pretty good. Great range for what I do.
The 28-300 is convenient though I rarely use it.
It’s noticeably less contrasty than the others and not as sharp on the long end.
For portraits, I use a 70-200.

I have found in moving to the 810 and 850 the increased mp requires the very best glass. My wife uses the 24-120 on her 750 which seems fine when I process her photos. But on my 810 or 850 seems to produce some micro blur and softness. We have both stopped using the 28-300. But I do get good results from the 24-70, 70-200 and 200-500. I shoot mostly from tripod with all the usual stabilization techniques so think I am actually seeing the difference in lens performance. When I do shoot handheld I always try to use a lens with VR.

I don’t have a D810 but I love my 24-120 f/4 on my D750. Your decision is obviously influenced by what you typically shoot.

I have a full array of Nikon glass for my D810. The lens that I use 75% of the time is my 24-70 f2.8.

I use the D810 and my go to lens is the Sigma 24 - 105 f4 Art. For a longer lens I use a Nikon 70-300. I have others, but those seem to fit most of my needs.

I love the D810! However, I do use a variety of different lenses depending on what I'm shooting. My go-to lens is an older 28-70 f/2.8 that I bought used at KEH. It's a great lens although does not have VR. I don't miss it. I also use a 16-35mm f/4 that is great for landscapes. For wildlife, I use either a 70-200 f/2.8 (with or without a TC) or a 200-500 f/5.6. All of these lenses are tack sharp! I started buying FX llenses long before I had a FF camera. That way, when I did make the leap from my D7100 to the 810, I already had the glass.

My grandson has a D810 and the lens he uses almost exclusively is the Nikon Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VRiii. This is an extremely sharp combination. The lens is expensive at $2800.00, but worth it.

If you are only going to have one lens for the D810 I'd choose the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 or the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8. Good luck.
