I’ve read a lot of recent comments on various compact cameras here, but I may have missed feedback on the
Canon g5 x. I’m interested in a small travel camera. It seems to have everything I want in terms of focal range, viewfinder, manual and touch controls, etc. It’s a little big for most pockets, but I wear cargo shorts mostly so I think it’s size would be ok. Its getting a bit dated, but I’d like to hear from anyone who has used it. Thanks.

At one time I was considering G5X as an upgrade to Canon G11 which i own for quite some years now. But ultimately settled with a Sony A6300. Canon G5X is a great camera. I kind of liked the feel that it was like a small SLR with all the knobs and controls in the right place and nice feel/balance. Check out battery life on G5X reviews. You may also want to consider buying additional battery. Also check out Canon G7XII seems small has some nice reviews.

Got one for my wife. Sbe loves it! It was a major step up from her point and shoot Olympus and she gets fantastic shots with it. Get an extra battery or two as tbe life is pretty dismal, but they are small enough to carry two in a shirt pocket.

I don’t own one but have rented it several times. It’s a very nice camera. One small complaint is that the button for movies is under the thumb rest and I keep accidentally switching modes. It is getting on in camera years, so I’ve been looking for news of a MkII version. Two of its 1” stable mates—G7X and G9X have been updated so I figure the G5X should be due.

In classic UHH fashion, let me suggest you consider the G7X MkII. No built in EVF (and attachment) but the same optics and a newer processor that the G5X.

Good luck.

I agree, most advanced point & shoot compact cameras shouldn't be described as "pocket cameras", cargo pants or shorts is the way to go. They have to be a little bigger to fit all the buttons & dials and vu-finder on the body. 20 mp, 24-100 equiv. lens should cover most situations. I think you'll be happy with the G5X's photo's.

We bought my daughter a G5X for her trip to New Zealand. She realized that you have to set raw for each setting(ie: auto, shutter priority, aperture priority, manual) or it would default to small jpegs. Once she did that it has been a fabulous quality camera for her at a easy to carry size. She insists that having an eyepiece to look thru makes all the difference, especially in high sunny scenes.

FWIW, I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100 which I am quite happy with which seems to match, or exceed, the specs of the G5 X. It doesn't have a hotshoe, but is $200 less (both on sale) and has a much wider zoom range (25-250mm equiv).

I have a G5X for travel, impromptu, and casual photo. It is a terrific performer. I upgraded from G9 after considering many others, such as the latest Sony RX models, Lumix models, etc. When I requested suggestions on this web site, everyone who commented plugged the camera they use - I got no comments about the merits of the G5X.So, I rrad as many trvhnocal reviews and watched as many video reviews as I could find. In the end, the G5X was a no- brainer! Besides all the features it has, it will be incredibly reliable for a very long time.

It's unfortunate that Canon has chosen to limit the zoom range on the G5X to just 100mm, otherwise it would be a very attractive camera. I have a G16 which is a great camera, and it zooms to 140mm. The drawback to it is that it has a small 1/1.7" sensor and just 12.1mp. If that lens were on the G5X, I'd be hard pressed to not get one. Canon seems to make some pretty darned good small cameras.
