I was fortunate enough to "stalk" into another shoot with a GBH that I have tracked over the last few weeks. Today, it was cold, and very overcast. Rain was forecast to begin within the next few minutes. It was about the same time of day that I caught him here last week at about the same location, from about the same distance and angle. Same camera/lens combo, different camera settings (due to lack of light), and very different lighting and look at the results....
As always, downloads are significantly better. Which do you prefer and why????
220mm f 6.3 1/1250 ISO 5000 EC +0.3

200mm f 5.6 1/1250 ISO 3200 EC +0.3

1. I like the general tone better.
I understand that the colors appear differently with different lighting
and you asked why I would pick one photo over the other.
Let's face it, anyone can screw around in post processing and change the
colors of the bird and probably get colors similar to the second photo.
For that reason, I'm going with which ever photo is more representative
of the bird's true colors, rather than how they appear under certain conditions.
My vote is for #1.
The first photograph for me, looks more natural. Best viewed in the download.
Well taken.

Both downloads are great and I'm more accustomed to the number one lighting, but would go with what the conditions were at the time if possible.
#1 is more natural looking.
The responses so far are pretty much what I expected. The second image with the sun at "golden hour" glinting off of the head/wings is natural. It is just what the camera sensor captured in that particular light. I too prefer the image taken in muted light even though I had to push the ISO a bit higher (hence a bit more noise) that I am completely comfortable with.
As always.... it is about practicing, learning, and sharing what we can to help others that might be interested. Thanks to all who responded. It is always good to get feedback
Second is great, espcially with the water droplets off the feet and the lighting of the underside
of the wing. Nothing beats the golden hour for light.
Let there be light. The second shot for me. The second shot is sharper and more interesting with water droplets and green vegetation on the birds feet. vz

I prefer the second shot...the golden light is so beautiful shining on the bird.
the water drops are cool too.
These are excellent example of the principle that "it's all about light". I like both shots.
#2 for me. I love the sunset light!
