No! It is more about taking responsibility for one's own personal protection and not relying on some government agency to do it for you.
Agreed. Combat Commander always at hand.

Practice, practice, practice. Coupled with a firm resolve to prevail if such a situation ever arises, and the outcome is predictable. Only drew my pistol once as a young policeman, but the other guy would have regretted his choice to fire at me had he survived.

Yes! John Browning's masterpiece.
How many lives can be taken with an automatic firearm weilded by a lunatic in 5 seconds?
How many seconds will it take for the police to arrive after being notified ??????????
Think about it.

When seconds count the police are only minutes away.
Why are you folks so hang up on guns?
Ever try holding up your hand to stop a barrage of bullets from a madman ?????
Got news for ya. It doesn't work.
However, if there were one armed individual (besides the madman) it would be possible to save some lives.
The police do what they can but they are not magicians, nor are they able to predict when/where a tragedy is about to occur.

Depends on who is carrying the gun. Train, practice, train some more. And work on the mental attitude, it is often the determining factor in self defense or even if you need it in the first place. Those who look and act like potential victims often become victims. Those who project a state of alertness and "I can handle it. Don't mess with me." will often be passed over for an easier looking victim.
Just like a home with alarms and signs posted (yes they can be gotten around with effort) gets passed by but the house down the block where they leave the windows open and gates unlocked is easier for the thief and with less risk.

Correct, the police can not protect you, they usually arrive to clean up the residue and maybe get lucky enough to convict the offender. Maybe.
The time it takes for someone to honk after the light turns green
