Thinking of upgrading my camera equipment (Nikon D90) to something lighter and easier to use. Any opinions on the new Nikon D3500? It's entry level but looks to have decent advanced capabilities. It's about half the weight of the D90 too!!
Thanks for any responses.

The D3500 can only be purchased with a lens i think. However, it's only $400 with the lens. It's smaller and lighter than the D90 and I think would yield better image quality than the D90. However, I think it's not easier to use than the D90 because it's a lower end model.

And likely the D3500 does not AF older Nikkor AF lenses. You'd need a D7xxx for that at a minimum.

Great tip!
I believe one would need af-s or af-p lenses for the 3500.

For $649 you can get the D3500, 18-55, and 55-300. Both lenses will auto focus and have VR.

The D90 has a built in motor to drive the focus in AF lenses. The D3500 does not.
Therefore your existing lenses may not auto focus on the D3500.
Autofocus is available with AF-P and type E and G AF-S lenses

I have an 18-55 AF-S and a 70-300 AF-S. THE 3500 TAKES an AF-P lens.

If you want lightweight, you can go up to the D5600 and still have a nice, lightweight camera. The fully articulating screen on the D5600 makes it worth the extra $ to me, but if you never want to utilize it, go for the D3500.

The Nikon D3500 has a pentamirror viewfinder. Your D90 has a superior pentaprism viewfinder. The glass prism inside give a larger, slightly brighter view through the viewfinder.

If you want a Nikon DX format camera, you need to go for a D7200, D7500, or D500 to get the pentaprism viewfinder.

With those cameras, you also get dual command wheels which helps out with a variety of settings.

Why would you go from a older camera to a bottom line camera. This is a camera if your an avid shooter you will out grow it the first time you go out and shoot. Go with the D7100 or higher where you can get a excellent plus from KEH for less than you will for a D3500. Buy a camera you can grow into instead of out grow.
