For me, the second has more impact than the first.

I like both. Two simple shots that are layed out in a geometric design. I see your geometry classes have payed off

Is that because it is in monochrome?

I think both of these are lovely, Graham. I assume the first one shows the natural colours of the church. I like seeing that. But the B&W is nice also and fitting.

Maybe, but I also think the patterns in the mono version have greater impact than the ones in the entire scene.

One of my favorite subjects of your photography. My father-in-law, who was a forestry professor and dean, also became a minister in the Cumberland Presbyererian Church. It did not require a seminary degree unlike most brances of the Presbyterian Church. There was a small Church, outside of town, which had been one of the oldest Churches in the state and he was determined to keep it alive. Being Scottish himself, he made arrangements one summer to do a minister swap with a minister in Scotland. Like the Christmas movie, they (wives included) lived in one anothers' houses as well. During that time my f-i-l visited a number of Churches in the area, each time collecting a old "communion" coin....it being the habit of the Churches to give communion coins to those in right relationship with the Lord admittance to communion. He mounted them so both the front and back could be seen. When he passed away it was the one thing that I asked for. I still have it and think it is a nice piece of history. Most of the coins go back to the 19th century.
