Saw a few cool dragonflies on here the other day...thought I'd include one of my own. They are alusive little buggers but this guy stayed for a few. Notice the light on the rock under his wing (it almost looks like more wings). Thats the light passing thru his wing like a cellouse filter....
This is beautiful. Now I thought that dragon flies were blue, but I've seen these amber colored ones. I have a hard time photographing them, what settings do you use? Cheryl

Thanks Cheryl... I do see a lot of blue ones too..but they are smaller than this guy.... I use a Nikon D7000 with the kit lens (18 - 105). Took this on a walk on a bright day in a dark cove of overhanging branches at the lake. The sun spot shining thru the open branches to the rock made him look like he was in a spotlight. this was full 105mm @ f/8 ISO 200, 1/250s from about 10 feet. I cropped it to make him stand out. With that particular scene setting for the shot (bonus that he stayed still.. :o) there would be lots of variables to get the look you were going for...sometimes we get lucky!
I agree...I occasionally get lucky too. And I do mean luck because these little fellows are very hard to focus on when moving, whether in AF or manual. Actually, in manual, my eyes aren't that great and I still can't capture them well. I was just trying the other day while fishing in a boat. The boat was moving a bit, the sun was high and they looked washed out and blurry. I tried numerous settings, none came out. But, I did get a fairly good photo of some turtles on a rock. Well thanks for posting and if you ever get a blue one, post it please. Thanks, Cheryl

I love that color. If I was going to be a dragonfly, that's the color I would want to be. Very nice shot, BTW. Dragonflies are one of my all time favorites.
