Beautiful photo. One thing I notice that I have not seen on other butterfly photos is the end of the wings look to be chewed up. Am I correct that the wings have been chewed and, if so, what would have done the chewing?

What a beauty, Merry, and a butter I've never seen before! This is one spectacular bug and super shots of it! About the wings being a bit raggedy, I see butters in late summer with their wings torn and tattered. I think maybe it's just normal late season wear and tear??

thank you, dennis . I appreciate your comment. it could have been done by birds, lizards, and other predators of the butterfly.
wear and tear is natural over a butterfly's lifetime, and severe weather, brushes with plants, spider webs, etc. all take their toll.
the longer a butterfly lives, the more tattered it looks.

thank you, bob! he does look a little rugged...kind of like us humans...
the older we become, the more tattered and rugged and worn out we get.
maybe that happens to raccoons too?

thank you for your lovely comment, donna! yes...that tattered look and wear and tear is natural.
the longer they live, the more tattered they look. I love them though...tattered or not.

Great capture, Merry and I have seen some so beat up late in the season that it seemed like a miracle that they could fly! One of my butterfly books states that about the only major difference in the yellow form of the Western Black Swallowtail and the Anise Swallowtail is that the Anise has a yellow eyespot with a center black pupil in the upper side of its hindwing, but a little green leaf is covering that section of it in your image, so if you have any other image of it, you might want to take a look right in the center of its hindwings near the back edge! Great catch and always love to find a species new to me! Take care!

I will Google the anise, corky. Thank you for the info. It is amazing they can still fly even with a tattered wing.
