I'm thinking of buying this camera. From what i've seen online, it's really good. Has anyone had any experience with this one? It would seem, given the size of the camera, that a really long telephoto would be difficult without a tripod.

Maybe some pics if anyone has any and some pointers on how it does on telephoto and also the macro setting.

Thanks for any help.

Here are some of the threads on this camera, it's been talked about a lot. I'm thinking of getting one, also.

EXCELLENT camera!! That is what I use. Use the SEARCH at the top of the page and put in "SX40" or "SX 40" and search. You should find many good links with example photos and lots of good information.

My samples below are all Hand-Held, with no flash. With tripod they would no doubt be better!

Not trying to hi-jack your thread, but really hand to comment on the pansy photo, those are excellent!

I love mine, only had a Canon S80 with a 1 by 1 display and an optical viewfinder. The Canon SX40 has:
Night shots-with tripod, shots with intentional blur, sequence shots(person running), bracketing (3 shots same picture 3 different exposures), macro, face detection, blink detection, with a 16mg card up to 999 pictures. Up to 1/2400 of s second, up to 1600 ISO (I never go past 800), scene view with many good presets etc. A great employee at a nearby Target who had one, tutored me, and convinced me that it was good. To learn to use camera download and read, read, read the manual. Some have said it is hard to read. I don't think so, if you study a bit. I am thinking having of a camera store, supermarket, or FedEx etc. print it out for me.

tdklex,
I have the SX40 and am VERY glad I purchased it. When you read all these recommendations, please keep one thing in mind: NONE of the cameras will be the be-all-do-all camera because they all have features that others don't. This is true across the board. Having said that, the SX40 is doing everything I've needed it to do and it has produced outstanding photos, in my opinion. There are three others that give the SX40 a run for the money; they are the Nikon P510, the Panasonic FZ150, and the Fujifilm X-S1. Any of these 4 cameras will help you get great results, provided you READ THE MANUAL and practice, practice, practice. You need a good steady hand, especially when you've extended the camera lens to its maximum; therefore, you should plan on getting a tripod to help with those situations. Here are 3 examples of photos taken with my SX40 and NONE of them have been edited or tweaked in any way. The colors in each one are amazingly accurate.

You can do a lot with it - check "Sharpness", and jump it up 1.5 clicks Definitely get a tripod. Use the EXIF on good photos to find the lens' "Sweet spot" - probably f5.6

I am buying one in a week or so and would like to know just what comes in the box. Is a manual included with the sx40 hs? With the 60D came an excellent 322 page pocket sized Instruction manual. I find a printed manual more handy than a PDF file. What say you?

I feel your pain - not only is it NOT a hard copy, it is written by Japanese Kindergarteners just learning Engrish. And (My pet peeve) they don't use the name of the functions and buttons, they use an icon-picture, which is so small you have to blow up to view 1/3 of a page to decipher.

Here are some photos I took with my SX40 under a variety of conditions. I really like my SX40 for what I use it for but I always shoot with my 40D when out with just the purpose of photographing.
