I have had good service from Canon.
I haven't needed it often but a few questions are always answered quickly and fully.

That doesn't sound very good. Did you mean that their service is second to none?

I've owned Pentax, Canon, and Nikon, and never had a problem with any of them. The thing to do before you buy from any camera manufacturer, or for that matter ANYTHING or any service you buy from any company, read the warranty or terms and conditions to see what the company will and won't do. At the end of the day, THAT is what you're left with so take it upon yourself to know this.

From my limited experience, I would say Nikon, but not Sony.

Always excellent service from Canon. Had one camera fail under warranty--quick repair and turn around. Two separate episodes with clumsiness. Camera slipped off my shoulder and landed lens first on a stone floor. Another time I tripped over a street grating and fell while holding a camera and cracked the LCD screen. Both were repaired quickly and returned better than new, i.e. the repair crew obviously checked out the whole item and fixed what was needed not just what I asked for, since both functioned even better than before. About 3 years ago, I switched to M43 because at my age I wanted lighter weight. No problems yet with Olympus, so nothing to report on their CS, but I stayed with Canon for decades and hesitated to make the shift in part because of their excellent service.

I have only had one interaction with Canon customer service. I emailed a problem and within 48 hours a camera tech answered me. I think that is awesome.

I will never buy another Pan because of the way I was treated. The camera was just over two years old. Sorry, but for $35.00 they may be able to fix the problem over the phone. I posted my problem on UHH and had the fix in twenty minutes.
Called Canon quit a few times about my 5D2 and they always solve it. If I called about my A-1, I think they would help.

I've read that that Panasonic Lumix lenses have plastic lens mounts.

Sure, your first reaction might be: "these parts are subject to a lot of mechanical
stress--they should be made of steel."

But hey, metal is old technology, while plastic is a genuine Space Age material!
We should all be thankful to Panasonic for innovating.

The superior strength of plastic is why it has replaced steel beams in bridges
and high-rise construction. Plastic has completely replaced steel in concrete
reinforcement, gun barrels and drill bits. And we can all testify to the superiority
of a plastic dinner knife over a stainless steel one.

To really understand the wonderful advantages of plastic, you only need ask a
little bird: "cheap cheap cheap!"

Or you could ask Neil Young:

"I tried to plug in it
I tried to turn it on
When I got it home

It was a piece of crap
Piece of crap"

The funny thing is, Leica doesn't ship any plastic lens mounts...ever.
But it licenses its name to Panasonic, which does.

Mr, Consumer, him buy anything!

In my opinion for Tech support I found Canon head and shoulder above the rest. As for service I found Canon and Tamron fine as I have stopped using Nikon and Sigma over the years as they were not standing up tp the other two. That is me and my personal experience over a lot of years. I now just don't use the products they sell.

After a disastrous learning experience with Panasonic I've about decided that choosing a camera based only on how good the system is just isn't good enough! Which camera brand is easiest to work with when it comes to maintenance, repair, and general customer service? Any to avoid? I'd love to hear your opinions and experiences - thank you!

I have really only worked with Nikon most of my adult life. As a member of Nikon Professional Services I get preferential service. But, even before that I felt Nikon took care of me. If I ask they will send me free shipping labels. They have always communicated with me on repairs and product questions.
I believe Canon is also very good when it comes to customer service.
I do own some Sony equipment and when one of my point and shoots was dropped I went through their site to work out the details of repair. To my surprise I was linked with their independent repair service and they sent an estimate based on the camera model (interesting). But, based on their estimate, I ordered another point and shoot from Ebay for $30.00 more than their estimate. But, it was nice getting the estimate so fast. I was able to make a decision on that repair much quicker than if I had sent it in for an estimate.

Yes, I believe he did mean second to none, and he’s quite likely correct. The English language is a fickle thing!

I have been a Nikon shooter for a little over 40 years and never needed their customer service--
