This is a great article. It is too bad these vehicles could not be preserved. Thank you for sharing the link.

You all are correct!!!
Amazing photos and the amount of equipment is amazing as well.
However, the author said he "broke into the building"?
I don't know about where he was, but its a wonder he didn't get shot on the spot!

Wonder why instead of letting it set further that they don't dismantle the equipment and sell it for scrap?
These place are so hard up for money, yet they let things like this rust to death and become worthless?
It's like many farmers that let their equipment rust to death in the fields. Why?

Still, very very interesting shots!

I built part of the tail on the first two shuttles in 1974 at Fairchild Republic in Farmingdale NY. I could see that this was a mock up by the shape of the tails. Very interesting, thanks for posting.

Not in the USA?

One image caption: "It looks as if the working shuttle was just about ready for its maiden voyage before it was grounded during the fall of the Soviet Union. With the Russian Space Program still in full effect, it surprises us that these can be left abandoned."

You'd think there would be a market for them - if only as displays.

If seen similar pictures of the Russian space shuttles - the ones that, coincidentally, looked exactly like ours but were never flown.

According to the article, one shuttle made it to launch for an unmanned orbit. It was destroyed when the hangar it was stored in collapsed.

Did anyone else get annoyed with the ads that kept popping up. An ad would pop up then go away to be replaced by another pop-up ad.

Once again it appears that the U.S. did the R and D for these shuttles. Much like the U.S. does most of the R and D today for Chinese combat a/c.

Yes, I did!!!

But, what can be done about them? You click on anything and zip...you are at their space!
Plus there is not a "X" to get out of the pop-up ad either!

VERY annoying!

Amazing photographs. The shooter was brave to go up onto those crumbling cat walks. You do know that Kazakhstan is where the old USSR housed all its missile silos, and the missiles are still there. Kazakhstan is a huge country, but i'm betting the silos are not far from this hangar.

I looked at the pic before reading the descriptions. I'm sure glad we could help the Soviets with their shuttle design. There's a cosmonaut museum in Moscow that's well worth a visit should anyone find themselves there. A shuttle model is included. The guide told us that even though it resembled the American design, it was designed to be vastly improved. Here's a pic.

I guess it all comes down to, "Nobody does anything for nothing"
