Same for Spiratone - good source of camera accessories and darkroom supplies - what and when happened to it?

Funny. They were to relocate near a Fortunoff's in 1997. But 5 years later, Fortunoff was gone as well.

Back in the 1960’s and 1970’s I used to shop at 47th Street Photo. It was a first class operation like B&H & Cameta are today. Prices were great (they weren’t as “fixed” in those days). It is gone now (an outfit called 42nd Street Photo is in no way the same thing). Does anyone know what happened to it? Did it morph into one of the stores we know today? Back then stores weren’t open on Sunday unless they were closed on Saturday. 47th Street, like B&H, was owned by observant Jews so I’d shop there on Sunday when NYC parking spaces were plentiful! I bought my Pentax 6x7 there in 1979 and still use it.

MOST of the links listed for 47th Street Photo on Google's search page go to B&H, Amazon, Walmart, or (worst!) 42nd St. Photo. If you click the 47th St links like, "http://www.47stphoto.com/lenses/digital-slr-lenses.html", you get a blank page!

A search for "47th street photo wikipedia" in Google directs you to an article about 42nd Street Photo. Searching Wikipedia for "47th street photo" yields no article!

One can only conclude that they were SO BAD, they are out of business and others are trying to snag you with their name.

I bought several items from them in the early 1970s, when I was in high school. They were fine, back then.

I've made purchases from 47th St Photo on Ebay. They promptly answered questions I had about a product. They also sent the products I ordered. Yes, the camera was gray market, but I knew that and was willing to take the risk (which has paid off because the camera is long out of warranty and I never needed to repair it).

Actually 47th St Photo does still exist, but only as an Amazon storefront.

Bought my first digital camera from them. Good price, good service, friendly personnel. When it died, went back......different experience. "Want'n buy this, how about insurance, hey got a good deal on whatever"........Click! Never been back. Think like so many reputable American businesses it was bought by people wanting to cash in on it's good rep.
