Joe Edelman...a very inciteful photography...check it out before it gets moved to oblivion.

joer, thanks for posting this link. It falls along lines that I take when posting photographs. All too often, I see on this site people expressing how they'd have photographed a scene, person, object, etc. I think we all tend to express what we'd like to see in a photograph done by others. This is a good article to guide the folks for whom it was intended. I tend to look at the technique, rather then subject, pose, composition (most of the time) not how they did the photograph, what inspired them to take the photograph, etc. Though, discussions regarding inspiration are interesting.

Well, I suppose it depends on who one asks.

I looked at Edelman's Recent Images Gallery:
https://www.joeedelman.com/portfolio/

The lighting is good, and the models are lovely. But the images--sad to say--all look like advertising.

Real fashion photography has to show off the clothes--that's a lot more difficult than painting
theatrical make-up on models. One can date the decline of Vogue from when it
stopped being about apparel and started being about lifestyles. 1960s fashion image:

If the Edelamn's painted dolls aren't fashion, and aren't portraiture, what are they? Digital
attention-grabbers: a flashing sign that says nothing except "Look at me!"

Portraiture--even with a lot of make-up -- is always superior: as in this B&W shot on a
London street in 1977: https://lyriquediscorde.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/siouxsie8.jpg
That's how Siouxsie Sioux looked every day. That's who she is.

If Edelman wants to make people look like plastic, why start with real people?
This sort of thing is much better done without the camera--and with
some artistic ability.

In an attention-grabbing contest, the digital artists will win every time. Also in an effects constest.
But especially in an imagination and creativity contest.

That's why photographers must be photographers, not visual cake decorators.

I work with kids several days a week. Unfortunately, this sort of thing is very consistent with their take on the things of life and with the things that draw their interest and approval. I think that we as photographers somehow have opportunity to undertake a mission to recalibrate their interests and tastes. Haven't yet figured out how to do it, though.

Haha.
Many times so true. 45-55% either way.

His perception is right on.
