I didn't know that the Canon made a prototype 40-200mm f2.8 lens. It was introduced in 1959.
Could you see this being revived as an R mount L series lens.
This on is for sale at bargain basement price of only $29,999.00.

Very interesting!
Are those zoom and focus levers?
Something useful for movie use.

If it's introduced in 1959 it should have the R mount too.

What kind of lens is it? For use on 35mm camera? 30K for it. I could get a very good use car at that price. Do major repair on my house.

Here is the article and it is the R mount which means it works great on FL, FD and FDn cameras with NO adapter.

It was designed for the canon SLR camera system. Yes, 35mm format.

I'd buy it, but then I'd have the added expense of buying a Canon body.

How cool would it be to have a Canon body circa 1959 to go with it. Heading out to buy a MegaMillions ticket now!

I was thinking about the Leica 1600mm, but 2 mil is a bit high, should look into this one.

One of the rarer Canon zooms that I now wish I had never let go was the FD50-300mm/4.5L. Here is a Fred Miranda Review.
I highly recommend this lens to any adaptation. It would be excellent on an R. It still commands prices of around $1000. Also search for it on eBay.
