A co-worker's 16 y/o has expressed an interest in photography. She wants to graduate from cellphone selfies! I'm thinking a small point and shoot with a moderate focal length range. Since I have no experience with them I am tossing it out to you knowledgeable folks for some ideas to pass on. This will be a Christmas gift. She didn't really have a price range in mind but if it were my kid I would probably stay in the $200-$300 price range in case it is a passing fancy.

Thanks in advance!

A point and shoot is not much more than a cell phone in the hands of the inexperienced. But you price range on the other hand would not get the kind of camera the person can grow into. Mastering a $200-300 dollar point and shoot would not allow much growth. The best you could do is $549.00 for a Nikon 3400.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1275034-REG/nikon_1573_d3400_dslr_camera_with.html

I did find a nice D7000, a really nice used camera to start out with. But $296.95 for just the body would be the top of your budget. You could add a Nikon 35 1.8 lens for about a $76.00 more.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-D7000-DSLR-Camera-Body-Only-9300-Clicks-Low-Shutter-Count/264032946821?hash=item3d79970a85:g:ygoAAOSwnfRb2khM:rk:3:pf:0

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-Af-s-DX-35mm-F-1-8g-Lens-W-UV-Filter/233013404167?epid=1101589447&hash=item3640ae62

SO, for $376.00 could get you a very nice Nikon D7000 with a 35 1.8 lens that would allow the person to start out with a camera that can easily set on PROGRAM and it would act like a point and shoot, then, as the person grows with the camera, it can be set on MANUAL. So, this camera allows growth as the person masters photography.

Check out the Goodwill auction site. I recently needed 2 small pocket cameras. I found a mint Canon S95 (f2.0 lens) for about $40 and then a mint Fuji F500EXR (10X zoom) for about $25 (including shipping). I have seen many other cameras there (including DSLR's) that would meet your needs. Just search the site for "digital camera" (singular), and look at the pictures and description carefully.

Good luck. Hope that this helped.

Why buy a P&S? They already have one, it's called a cell phone! If a teenager, it probably is a passing fancy, but some get hooked for life. Tell them to spend a little more, get at least a used M4/3 and rest comfortably knowing that they will be spending hundreds of $$ more on that teen over the next ten years. This investment will seem like a drop in the bucket.

Got a Costco or Sam's? Good value, Canon has similar and easy resale on ebay. https://www.costco.com/Nikon-D3500-DSLR-Camera-2-Lens-Bundle.product.100461398.html

In regards of the young lady wanting to "grow" beyond her cell phone camera, please send an email to me at rob32@icloud.com. I may have an inexpensive solution to her "problem".

You will get many suggestions and all of them good. But, if you can, talk to the young lady and learn what she wants! What are her specifications must it fit in a hand bag or does she want to wear the camera around her neck. Will she take it to the pool, ocean or lake? What does she think she want to take photos of? In short, don't make a blind suggestion!

I have some experience with teenagers and cameras. If your just looking to buy a camera for a kid so they can find out if they enjoy taking pictures, a SLR looking P&S will do fine. But, if the young person is already interested in photography then a previously owned D3000x or a Rebel Ti with an 18-55 kit lens will work out great for them. It looks like a real camera ('cause they are), which gives them some peer status, and entry level SLR's do a lot of hand holding so they can focus on composition rather than camera settings. I shoot Nikon so, my younger aspiring photographer friends get D3100's, which allows us to share expertise and lenses. I love helping them learn the joy of the art of photography.

Consider the Canon S110. It is about $200, small light weight (about the size of a deck of playing cards) and takes impressive closeups if you decide to do some closeup shooting. Lens is f 2.0 so will take photos in low light. IMHO, this is a VERY underrated camera. Just do a search on the camera to see videos and more information. I also have a Canon T3i with three lenses but for just walk around shooting and for closeups I use the S110. I have recently discovered that my best photos with this camera are shot with aperture priority (AV). The ISO is very easy to set if you want to shoot in other than automatic ISO. F stop is also very easy and fast to set.

I have the S100, needless to say, the predecessor to the S110, which added WIFI and removed the GPS. Like Vigneron, I like the camera but it is getting a little long in the tooth. Mainly, small sensor and shutter lag. Still for casual "nobody move!" shots, it's a great little camera and IMHO started the whole advanced point and shoot movement. For the money, it is a good start but maybe a frustrating for the reasons cited. An alternative could be a used or refurbed Canon G16? The sensor is about the same same size as the S-series, but it has a fairly fast 280-140mm equiv F1.8-2.8 lens, WIFI, fairly fast Digic 6 processor and other stuff. $400 refurb at Canon's website.

Nikon Coolpix B700. Heads and shoulders above anything in it's price range (refurbished or used in excellent condition for less than $350). All the camera for stills and video she will need for years to come.

What did last more than a month? DSLRs?
