Having just returned from an eighteen day trip to Italy and Spain many friends have said that they would like to see the photos. So, in the experiences of group members, what is a good number of photos to show so that I don’t bore my audience? Is 100 too many, would 50 be more appropriate? I think we all have probably sat through photo viewing sessions that are waaaaaaaaay to long but I never thought about what is a comfortable amount of photos. I realize that the amount of time narrating each slide is a factor also to consider.

GO!

In a show with a three-second timer, 50 might be about right.

25-30 and they must have a universal appeal. Some interesting historical meaning etc. Leave out the travel log rambling.
Beyond that it is just a bunch of home photos that no one if being honest give a rip about.

Nice trip. I put my photos on Shutterfly. On a trip like this I separate it into locations (cities) and post about 30 images per locations. Then If I have picture of people that I know and friends will recognized I post at most 30 pictures. Then the real hard part, I post trips best of 30 pictures max. This is had but this and the people picture is what most of my friends look at, except for my granddaughters who like to look at pictures with me.

For a group showing I would do 30 best and people if they are in photos or know people in photos.

I agree with Jaymatt. You will most likely shoot hundreds of photos during a trip that long. 50 to share would be about right. A side benefit is that it will cause you to broker down the best of the best. Those 50 or so photos can serve as the basis for a travel album should you decide to compile one.

I would definitely only show your best images. But since I rarely do travel photos per se and mostly try for artistic if not abstract compositions and lots of flowers, my issues would be very different from yours. How has your audience reacted in the past?

I have always utilized an online service such as Smugmug or Shutterfly for sharing photos with friends, relatives, ... I have 5 Shutterfly sites. I simply cull through the photos, process them and upload to an album. For sharing, I write an email, distribute to appropriate people and include a link to the album. It's really easy! Most of my links include 50 - 100 images from trips.

As an example, here's one from my recent Danube river cruise in August.https://imagesbymarkweiss.shutterfly.com/pictures/1427

6 to 10 minutes is a good length. Use Pro Show to create your show. It has pan and zoom effects plus many many transition effects and you can add accompanying music. Go to photodex.com to see what this program can do. You can have longer viewing times for great shots and shorter times for the more mundane. I create MP4 files and put them on a USB drive to view on my TV.

Our photo club members show slide shows periodically. We limit the slide show to to more than 6 minutes and this seems to work out fine. Cramming too many images into the six minutes actually takes away from the viewing. Give people 30 seconds or so to actually see the image and appreciate it.

May depend on your audience. My family and friends remember the old "slide shows" I did when they were actually "slides." So when I travel, they request the same. A slide carousel held 80 chromes, so I keep my shows to that number for a one week vacay. For my recent longer cruise down the Danube, there are more. If you hear snoring, just stop.

I post 2-3 images on Facebook and then provide a link to my Smugmug page. Most people don't want to look at someone's vacation photos.

I get more hits on my Smugmug page from strangers than family. I also sell quite a number of photos from my Smugmug page. I find my wife goes to the page quite often. Most family members just want to see the photos of family members looking or acting silly.

I would be sound asleep after the 1st 30 or so and so will most others.

I actually think 20 would be plenty but just in case it's not and your audience is loving the show, have 20 more ready. Better they want more than wish they hadn't come :)

My first long trip with digital I took over 1000 photos visiting several national parks. Even I get bored paging through them. How many mountains that look alike do you want to see? I still take a lot of photos, but I pick out just a few of the most interesting from each site to post for friends and family.
