Over a lake... from a boat... without a tripod.
But are my results somewhat forgivable for a first time venture?
60D, Sigma 8-16, 800 ISO, 1/40 down to .6 secs. RAW, developed in Lightroom 3.

you have your ISO set to a gazillion?
I tried with a tripod and cable release and all I got was headache and haring damage.

Bruce, yeah, since I was hand-holding and it was completely dark out, at ISO 800 I'm still only getting f4.5, which is as low as that lens will go.

I would say they are pretty damned good for a first timer. Fireworks are a hard shot to make with all the right equipment!!

you are forgiven--#4 is spectacular. I love fireworks and being right under them would be a perfect spot to enjoy.

If you go with iso 100-200 it will get rid of the smoke and still have colors on the fireworks. good job
