There is a Free software program called Faststone Image Viewer that is at version 6.7 and is faster than heck and reads virtually any file format from any camera including all raw files. It creates thumbnails extremely quickly and allows you to preview your media card or hard drives to do virtually anything you want to do with it. If all you used it for is previewing your Raw or other photo galleries, it is a real time saver. Windows sucks for reading any file formats other than png, jpg, bmp some other assorted file formats but really does stumble on Raw files. I would just set your default photo viewer to Faststone and ignore Microsofts photo viewer. Faststone also reads PSD files so if you have galleries of mixed formats, they will thumbnail with no problem. Obviously LR is your preferred editor pp program but for initial views or just cruising thru the gallery of images without opening light room, Faststone is the software of choice for speed. Once you get it, you will explore the tons of things it can do to a photo that may offer you some easy fixes if you decide not to open LR. Here is the link, check it out: http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

Thank you so much. I downloaded it when I read this, and love it.

Irfanview has opened every raw files I have thrown at it. It doesn't have much processing power, though, although it can do a lot of other things.

First off, before I get yield at, I have been through search and could not find an answer to this question. I am trying to view raw files in windows. Currently I shoot in raw and jpeg so I can preview my pictures prior to bringing them into lr for pp. I realize that there are many free programs out there that will allow me to view my raw images including a program from canon. I am not being lazy but it seems like a waste of time to view images twice before going to LR. I could be that there is not an answer to this question. If that is the case sorry for the interruption!!

There are several FREE Microsoft Window downloads that will allow you to view all RAW (whether Nikon or Canon) natively in Windows. I use these for general viewing but I use Lightroom and Photoshop for my processing/editing.

Canon also has a windows codec available that will show thumbnails and will allow viewing of raw files. Its part of the Digital Photo Professional https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/Default.aspx?Cat=Canon-Digital-Photo-Professional. They no longer have it as a separate download.

Just import them with LightRoom.
A. In the Library, use the right arrow key to advance from first photo to next.
B. If you like it - do nothing except hit the right arrow again.
If it is a bad focus, bad composition, blank, whatever, and you dislike it - hit the X key (to mark as rejected) and then the right arrow.
If you hit X and change your mind, hit U to Unflag it.

C. When you get to the last frame, hit Ctrl-BackSpace
When LightRoom asks "Delete from disk or just catalog?" Choose Disk and you will be free of them forever.

No need to shoot the JPG/RAW and you save time by not previewing them.

Check out Kelby's books on Adobe LightRoom. Mine is for LR4 (where I started) but the only things that change over time are that LR adds features
or drops some you never even used. You can probably get a used copy for cheap or borrow it from the library.

I do recommend FastStone Image Viewer as a good way to look at raw. It handles everything I have ever thrown at it and I usually run it
while in LR so I can toggle back and forth to see the processed jpegs after I export them. I use it to move or downsize photos to Dropbox, folders I am creating for a project, whatever, and it is simple and reliable.

I just double click the raw file and it opens. Comes with Windows.
Real easy just do it.
You can't actually see RAW in that all programs have to do something to the RAW data to make it visual to the human eye.

My win 10 laptop allows me to view but not alter Canon raw files.
I generally just upload them to Lightroom but noticed that they are also visible in Photos ( Microsoft program ).

Windows 10 can view RAW photos. You may have an older version that needs what’s called a codex file to do that. It’s a free download from Microsoft. Google it.

I am not familiar with "codec". Is this something which could be added to windows 10 which would recognize canon raw files?

I use Windows 10 with all the latest updates and I can view Canon raw files for all 4 of my Canon cameras in the Preview Pane of the built in Windows File Explorer, and in Windows Photos, or Windows Photo Gallery. You have three built in options. You may need to download a Codec, but I don't recall doing so.

Faststone is good and free. I use it as a fast viewers to show someone a few photos without going into lightroom....... Never to do what you want .... Just import into lightroom..... Mark the ones you wish to delete..... Then delete all at once.... One import, one view.

You can download codecs from Micro$oft that will permit the display of raw files in Windows Exploder, Windows Photo Viewer, Photos, and other M$ widgets in the same manner JPG and similar files are visible. If you have a new camera with a new raw format, the codec may not be available yet. With that caveat, it's worth a search on the M$ site.
