What an absolute JOY!!! I spend the previous afternoon setting up the menus to what I thought to be my preferences and just shooting test shots around the house/yard. Then yesterday I went out to the FGA and hoped for either the egrets, the coopers hawks, or the GBH that I have been scouting might be around.
I had to stalk this fellow a bit, but once I got close enough, I settled in, took a few test shots, and as if I had planned it, he flew right down the bank across my FOV and into the golden hour lighting!!! I have a series of 32 consecutive shots that are ALL crisply in focus and would have been "keepers" from my D3400!! I did not have my metering exactly correct as it is significantly different (better) than on the D3400, but I can certainly improve on that with experience and practice (and as seen here PP). Now I have the luxury to get nit picky with my images! (this is both a blessing and a curse!!)
Here are a few from his flight! They are in no particular order, just a sample. As always, downloads are significantly better!

What lens did you use?
Nikon AF-S 70-300 4.5-5.6 ED G
Can't complain about those
There was some effort put in to get these particular shots ... well done ...,
Great shots. #1 and #2 are magnificent. The color on the wings in #1 is something that I couldn't have imagined if I weren't looking at it.
It doesn't get any better. What a great opportunity.
What a treat to have this kind of success and enjoyment on your first outing with a new camera. And to think this is only the beginning!
I see from the exif that you have sharpness set to hard, so I'm thinking these are jpgs with little to no editing? The first and the next to last have a strong blue look to the shadowed wing while #3 and #4 seem the most naturally colored and perfectly detailed without the "crunchy" look that sometimes comes from over-sharpening.
Just my personal observations, of course. You should absolutely continue to do what pleases
you. All the best, happy shooting!

Thank you for the kind words Linda!! You are/were correct. I had this camera set on "vivid" and that created the harsh sharpness. I felt I needed it with the sensor/AF system in the D3400. It is clearly not as important on this body. My old laptop screen does not have near the resolution that I will need to PP properly. When I look at the thread on my cell phone, I too see the "blue" that seems a bit "unnatural". I did not PP to get to that, but I went back in did some post to eliminate some of that blue. Here are my results:

When compared side by side #1 of this group looks exactly like #1 of the first group. I agree that the second is a showstopper
