Actually, I was thinking about the F-86 Saber, the "last of the gunfighters." Built by North American Aviation.

I will take the A10 any day. I believe that is a 50 Cal. Machine Gun on the knose that can shoot 600 rds. a min. Not sure on the last, rds per minute. It is a tank killer. Last I knew it has a Titanium Tub to protect the pilot. I would like to know if this is all correrect. Never flew one.

Actually I think it is a 37 mm cannon. Great ground support aircraft. I agree with rgrenaderphoto although I believe that the F-104 Starfighter was the last fighter armed only with guns. I welcome corrections on that.

I remember as a "kid" in 1945 or 6, living a mile from O'Hare Airport, before it was a passenger airport, and seeing F86's come over the house. Everybody would run out to see them! A thrill back then. Of course, when I got to school and we had to stop talking (or teaching) every time a jet passed over, not so much of a thrill. But progress non-the-less!

It's actually a 30mm canon "Gatling" gun in the nose. When you look at it straight on it is offset, I believe because of the torque it produces! Great aircraft!

These A-10s are wonderful aircraft. They fly out of Davis-Monthan air force base here in Tucson (see the DM on the tail). I see them on a daily basis, going on training missions over the desert, and I've "examined" one on the floor at the Pima Air and Space museum here, where they also have an F-86 Saber hanging from the ceiling. And correct, the gun is a 30 mm Gatling-type cannon, but the cycle rate is 4200 rounds per minute of super-hard depleted uranium ordnance (that's why they can penetrate tank armor). You can learn more by doing an internet search. Bp

A10 is a great ground support aircraft. Too bad the air Force brass want to do away with it . I guess it's not a fast flier or pretty enough for them. The proposed replacement is a joke in my mind.

It is offset because only the barrel on the centerline of the aircraft fires as it rotates!

The F-8 Crusader was "the last of the gunfighters."
