Portland Bill

Wikipedia. - Portland stone is a limestone from the Tithonian stage of the Jurassic period quarried on the Isle of Portland, Dorset. The quarries consist of beds of white-grey limestone separated by chert beds. It has been used extensively as a building stone throughout the British Isles, notably in major public buildings in London such as St Paul's Cathedral and Buckingham Palace. Portland stone is also exported to many countries—being used for example in the United Nations headquarters building in New York City.

Taken two years ago.
1. Portland Bill Lighthouse in late morning mist.
2. I liked the juxtaposition of the delicate wild flowers against a sea of mist. The angler didn't seem to have any luck.
3. One of the dis-used old workings with blocks of Portland stone lying around.
4. A cross section of the geology.

Good looking stone beds in the fog. Thanks... now I know the origin of the term "Portland cement."

Very nice to know it is fog. It looks like the smoke-ash-filled views of my area right now (near Sacramento, CA)--exactly, but my sights aren't as pretty as yours of Portland.

Interesting set. Geology can be fascinating, and fun to learn where certain rock types originated.

Thanks jscorbin.
The origin of the term is here.
In 1824, Joseph Aspdin, a bricklayer and mason in Leeds, England, took out a patent on a hydraulic cement that he called portland cement because its color resembled the stone quarried on the Isle of Portland.

Thank you Katy. I find it painful looking at the devastation of communities in your area. But was staggered when your President immediately blamed your Forestry Commission for the fires and threatened to withhold funding to the State, which he has since reversed.

Thanks Randy.
This stretch of the coast in known as the "Jurassic coastline" many prehistoric relics are discovered fairly easily by walking along the beaches, close to the rocky cliffs, as the sea erodes the cliff faces.
