So I love my Lumix G9 - BUT I'm still not getting the super sharp sports pictures that I get with my Canon 7Dmii. But my back really wants me to keep using the lumix! I feel like I must be doing something wrong but I can't find any good tutorials, books, etc.. for this camera. Does anyone have any tips for good sports pics, or know a good tutorial? (either book or video)
The G9 is on my wishlist to replace my GX8.
Can you be more specific about lens, settings, conditions, technique, etc?
I own the G9 and just love this thing. As I have mentioned in previous posts, head over to naturalexposures.com.
Daniel gets into some great discussions on auto focus here. Also, he has a link for a new-ish guide put out by Panasonic for fine-tuning the auto focus settings.
I should add that I do not have any auto focus problems, so it could just be some conflicting settings?
Hope this will help.

I bought this camera for the super fast burst of photos so I can catch just the right time in a sport - (mostly baseball and horse jumping) - I use the Lumix GX 35-100 2.8. I keep it set on slow burst - which is still like 20 frames per second or something crazy . But something is going wrong with my focusing because I still getting some blur. As you can see on the picture with the black horse - this one is pretty good but the riders face doesn't have great detail. With my canon I would get crisp throughout. And the white horse is just straight up blurry - I'm getting this about 30% of the time.
I was wondering if there was a mode I need to be in for fast moving objects? Like with my 7D - I go to IA Servo etc...
Thank You so much for your time
Your samples look terrific as posted. But, you didn't check the "post original" block so nobody can pixel peep.
I think the Panasonic GH5 and G9 share the same focusing system. Try some google reading on GH5 focusing. You will find a lot because so many use the GH5 for video. Generally the comments will go something like "good autofocusing but not the match for the amazing Canon system". There have been two firmware updates for the GH5/G9 that improve autofocusing.
You may also find opinions that suggest mirrorless cameras have not yet matched DSLRs for "sports" photography for exactly the reasons you are asking about.
Also, there is a new firmware update that specifically addresses some autofocus issues. Give that a try, too.
1) Be absolutely sure the firmware in your G9 is up to date.
https://www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/lumix/g9_firmware.htmlIf you've never done a firmware update before, watch the linked video and read the instructions carefully. It's a very easy process, but you must do each step EXACTLY as instructed. Start with a fully charged battery. Start with a completely empty SD card that you format ONLY in the camera. Be patient — Go slowly — The update takes a few minutes, once you put the downloaded file on the SD card and insert the card in the camera.
2) +1 vote for Daniel J. Cox and his Natural Explorers blog. Go HERE:
http://naturalexposures.com/panasonics-lumix-g9/ …where he tells us about the 47,000 exposures he's logged on his two G9 bodies. Daniel is a pro who has put many photos on the covers of prominent magazines, including National Geographic. He conducts elite photo tours and safaris in exotic locations. He knows his craft and tells the truth about the gear, good, bad, or ugly, despite being a Panasonic Lumix Ambassador.
3) Contrast Detect AF in the G9 is very different from Phase Detect AF used in your 7D II. Each is better in different situations. You need to use different focusing strategies for each type of AF. Between what Daniel suggests, and what Panasonic says, you should be able to get better results.
Thanks to everyone for their recommendations - I'll start checking some of this out.
